Hi all,

I have a Potterton Combi 80 boiler 12+ yrs old and for some time now when you flick the central heating on the pressure will rise from just under 1 all the way up past 3 and into the red. As soon as it goes into the red water starts to leak out the back from the expansion vessel. A British Gas engineer told me that it’s unlikely he could find a replacement expansion vessel and if he could it would then have to be external and sit below the boiler on a worktop. He said the only option was a new boiler and another British Gas man came out and quoted me £2900 for the work.

Since then I’ve had conflicting opinions about the availability of a new expansion vessel and whether or not it would have to be external. One plumber told me the boiler was too old to find new parts for and quoted me £2200 for a new one.

If anyone could advise me about my chances of finding an expansion vessel that wouldn't have to be external. And does £2200 sound like a fair price for a new boiler? I was told it was just a straight forward boiler and flue swap with no other major work being done.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You should be able to get a expansion vessel for this boiler,it is getting old though and if expansion rusted through, can not be in that good a condition,so you may be wasting your money
Do not know were you are or what boiler they have quoted to fit but price not over the top

As usual there is a lot more work involved than you the customer realises and replacing a boiler is major works

The amount of times I go to a boiler change, with pots and pans all over, work top full of stuff as if we have a magic wand and a few quick waves, boiler is replaced, house is hot and customer hanging upside down from a ceiling hook in the warmth !!

imho

i agree totally with puddle, old boiler getting obserlete pans all over the shop, bat women hanging upside down, fair price but bat women will have to go sir that's where the condensates going
