Hello, i'm new to the forum and looking for a bit of advice.

in my new flat there's a strong chemical-type smell coming from kitchen sink / under sink area which gets worse as the boiler fires up.

Plumbers and Brit Gas have traced the smell to the condensate pipe from the Glow Worm flexicom24cx boiler (which is on internal wall and has condensate pipe that drains into under sink pipe work). The landlord sent round a plumber who didn't seem confident in what he was doing; he phoned a friend for advice and then put a tundish on the condensate pipe in the under-sink cupboard (he said it was a 'new one' on him which doesn't instill confidence).

Not being a plumber, i can't see how venting the condensate pipe to the under sink cupboard will help contain the smell?? Does a tundish have some sort of internal valve to prevent vapour from the condensate escaping into the room? So far i have noticed no improvement. If there's anyone out there (pref CORGI registered or who has knowledge of this), i'd be really grateful for your views as to whether this is a suitable course of action.

thank you, Jane

hi jane i see nobody has botherd to reply to you so i will try! im not corgi registerd but have a decent amount of experience in fitting boilers and pipework,i would suggest that if you keep smelling a foul smell or chemical as you put it then you are losing the trap seal from your kitchen sink or wahsing machine upstand if you have one,if the condensate is linked to your kitchen waste pipework or bossed into the pipework it should be sealed,i would imagine your boiler has internal trap inside the boiler. i would suggest you remove the tundish and soild pipe the condensate pipe back into the pipework, you can replace you kitchen sink trap with anti syphon trap and add an automic air admissent vale to your pipework which will help with any foul smells, condensate does not really smell but is acidic so it could be mixing with any old scummy crap in your pipework and creating the smell you talk of. the parts i talk will cost about £20 and half an 30-40 mins so you dont get ripped off,i hope this helps you,let me know!

A tundish on condensate pipework is a nonsense and it should be removed.
