I'm interested to know other plumbers takes on this. I visited a customers house to change a bath mixer tap the other day. No service valves on taps so I had to shut off the cold water system (combi boiler system).

Went to the internal stopcock, turned it off (so I thought) water was still flowing from the cold taps. I went to the water mains stopcock in the street, tried to turn it off but it wouldn't go past half way. The end result was that I couldn't shut the water off to do the job.

On speaking to the customer, he was aware from previous work on his property that his stopcock was not working but seemed content to rely on the water mains stopcock.

Would you charge the customer a call-out fee in this situation?

If I was asked to return to fix the problem (chargeable) then I'd probably not charge for anything but bump up the next invoice a little to reflect time taken on the first call out.

If I wasn't asked to return I'd charge £10.

If I declined the job (for whatever reason) I wouldn't charge.
