The good news though is that it will work! Plus you'll then have far more skills than you started out with ;)
I will let you know Dave. We are getting it today. Is it usual to always put in a new trap with a new sink then? You should have seen the black gunk I had to remove from the pipes  they were nearly blocked o_O

TBH Julia I wouldn't countenance not doing it. It's such a false economy and such a PIA. Life is too short to try to mend and make do - IN THIS INSTANCE. I'm all for saving money (being in Yorkshire ) but I've many more things I want to do than worry about whether the £3 I've saved is going to leak!
Once it's been installed a while, all the old rubber components 'set' to the shape they were installed to so become un-reuseable anyway.
Bite the bullet and install new as advised. You'll not regret it.:D:D:D

Right, we have it! Just want to check right way of inserting washers though please. Screwfix advise as pic with black washer and bevel end facing away from wall and red ring on top to contact waste exit pipe, however, online demo's are the other way round, is this right? thanks

Thanks Craig. It's just too high though. Should I just admit defeat now and call a plumber in to make the hole in the wall lower or cut the pipe on the u bend lower?

Diagram is CORRECT.

Don't you dare give up Billingham! Think about it. You can do this;)
Connect your sinks, blank off what's not used. Look at the U bend and realise you can position it virtually anywhere. You'll need 2 x elbow compression fittings plus some 40mm push fit pipe.
On the end of the pipe coming out of the wall put your elbow. As you look at it the open end will face to about 10 o'clock (so at an angle upwards).
Your trap (ubend) will need a bit of pipe to come out of it pointing at the wall. At the same distance from the back wall as the pipe to outside cut the pipe from the trap. Put the other elbow on. Measure between the two elbows and cut a new piece of pipe. Fit that. Job done.
My (very expensive) consultation fee will follow shortly...:D

Sorry Dave, I don't get it, any chance of a diagram?:(
