Our boiler, Hideaway100B, which was purchased 9 years ago, stopped working and I decided to have a look. I have done most of the plumbing around it anyway, but I had never looked into the boiler before.

The symptoms were that the flame would go out, and I would have to restart the pilot light and all. Then, once on, the flames would be red and not blue.

I took out the burner and looked at the back, at the very end there was a bucketfull of pine needles and other debris that the wind must have blown in. It was most all cindered / black / dry. After I cleaned that I noticed 3 panels, 2 on the sides and 1 at the back made of some kind of heat insulating material at a guess, white in colour.

The back panel had become un-hinged on the left hand side and was hanging in an awkward position, so it took me a while to replace the missing rivet with a screw to hold it in place.

While I was doing that work, I inadevertently scracthed the side panel and it gave off a white cloud of dust which I inhaled as my head was close and the draft was blowing it in my face.

Can those panels be made of asbestos ? I looked at the service manual and there is no mentioning of asbestos panels but I am worried. I have also sent an email to Glow-Worm from their website, but no replies so far.

Thanks

Its not on the list of known boilers containing asbestos.

It`l put hairs on your chest:D, to be honest there was probably more chance of killing yourself from the boiler thats not been serviced in 9yrs.
Contact Glow worm tomorow to put your mind at rest.

The list is on this site Stop Think Asbestos

I do notice that there is a 85-100BF this could be a hideaway so check the GC number

You have done the right thing by contacting glowworm though

Regards Coley

Are they meant to be including asbestos panels without any hazard warnings ?
