chelsea

I had a call this morning from a woman saying she wants a boiler installed,

she said to me she has a had a quote to take her old combi out and fit a new

one according to her its a dead easy job lol and she reckons she has had a

quote to fit for £250 to which i was very surprised

i Gave a a quote and she phoned me up saying i was taking the **** and slammed the phone down on me

correct me here

she bought a boiler and wanted someone to fit it and take out old one

please tell me your thoughts on prices please

better of without the job how can they flush commission run new condense etc for that price ridiculous min 450 even for a straight swop with no greif remember your gonna be liable for her whole house and probably her neighbours in her eyes

600.00 pounds as will have to flush system as well
ring her back and tell her to get her 250.00 pound cowboy to fit it and on his day off he can drive her to the hospital when it either gases her or blows scalding water all over her

Clearly a chancer...I bet she hasn't even had any quotes prior to phoning you. Probably just decided £250 is all she wanted to spend.

Just had another one has had a quote for 350 and wondered if i could do it any cheaper i told him to wonder off

problem is there are still poncy illegal fitters out there banging these boilers in
latest edition of gas engineer all the time they only get a 1000.00 fine and a smack on the bottom this will carry on
if you do illegal gas work lets have a min fine of 5000.00

Another customer who wants it all for nothing, wants to ring the merchants and check your prices etc etc etc but still expects bells and whistles.

Didnt you know, you are supposed to be working for £20 a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did anyone read about the millionaire who was caught recently driving his Ferrari at 87mph through a Swiss village. It was his second offence. He was fined the equivalent of $250,000 (that's not a typo!). They took his wealth into account when setting the fine!

Our courts should follow the Swiss example.

when taking into account all the overheads us gas safe engineers have to fork out £500.00 min for fitting. to be honest i would rather cut my nose off than fit a boiler for less.
it's not the labour they are paying for it's our expertise and knowledge we didn't spend 4 years at college to work for peanuts.
too many sell themselves short and work for peanuts and too many rogues around. well i ain't a monkey and certainly not a charity.
went to quote on a job couple of week back and fella was saying he'd been quoted £1200.00 for a new system with 3 rads(1 bed flat) and wanted me to beat it. i laughed and walked away when he said that.

call her back and say that you can do it next day saturday morning ! and you will charge her £50.00 and then ring again friday about 8pm just to confirm next days work and say see you in the morning at 7;30-am ! put the phone dawn and go enjoy your self ! when she call to ask you were are you , just say you are sorry and you have forgotten !then re schedule for sunday morning ! when she call asking where are you you just say how sorry you are and then reschedule for next day !
then let as know much she can take of it !!!:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

why not jail for repeat offenders and i dont just mean 3 months. If you dont know what you are doing and you are installing gas appliances then you have no care for others,
If you got caught carrying a knife twice then you would get 2 years so why not 2 years if you leave an ID installation a couple of times and are not registered?
I read in that gas mag they post through your door that the illegal fitter got fined less than it would have cost him to get qualified in the first place so technically he wins.

haha this guys a genius

You are also undercut by the part timers !! Firemen . shiftworkers etc who get gas safe registered and do jobs for beer and holiday money on their days off . They dont need to make a living its fun money ! Gas safe just take the money from whoever they dont care , so that £350 quote might well be from a bonafide hobby installer

had the same thing a gas asfe registered engineer quoted£250 for a combi- combi change over,my opinion is that he is selling him self short and doing the industry no favours,i think in the current climate people are desperate for work and quoteing under pressure to guarantee the work.what can you do!

desperation is a terrible thing in this current economic climate, what can you do when you have to put food on the table and pay the rent/ mortgage. so for people are who struggling you have my sympathy i was struggling last jan 2010. but you have to reinvent yourself when this happens. When your self employed your also a business man aswell as a tradesmen. there are so many things you can do gain business a lot with very little cost. at the moment work is very comfortable plenty of enquiries coming in. i also think when people are trying to batter you on price this is when your customer service skills come in to play. i have got so many jobs even when i'm not the cheapest just because of the way i treat a customer. it's a skill just just as important as your plumbing/gas skills and must be worked at all the time. remember no one shouts from the roof tops when you get it right but they certainly do when you get it wrong.
maybe a thread could be started regarding how to get customers and keep them i've seen loads of little bits of info around here having a dedicated thread similar to the plumbing tips might be a good idea.

gone off topic there a bit sorry

i usually just say to them "yep sure i can reduce my price , where would you like me to save the cost, on the quality of the workmanship or the quality of the materials i use"

its amazing how many it leaves with there jaws dropped its even better when they say ok thanks when can you do it.

you pay peanuts you get monkeys

Should bring in the law they have in Ireland. Illegal work can bring a 15k fine and/or a two year stretch in the nick

we must have a AGREEMENT TO HAVE MINIMUM CHARGED ON ALL WORK,just like minimum wage thing !!! who can we contact can we not make a agenda our selves

I think you will open a huge can of worms with this idea SGI, who would decide what is fair, taking into account the price difference around the country? As for our main body, they have little teeth when it comes to pushing things through, unless of course its for their own benefit, like the £100 payment for late applicants to the Gas Safe Register? What is that all about? If I choose not to re-register and leave it for a couple of months (not carrying out any gas work during this time) I would receive this "punishment" upon re-application. When did they sneak that one in the rules?? CAPITA - should never had go the contract.. ah that feels better now its off my chest! lol

Another story worth careful debate, CAPITA (Gas Safe Register) unlike the old CORGI scheme. CAPITA are a huge PLC stock market business with share holders to answer too. Which means, they are trying to make as much profit as possible in order for people to find it attractive to by shares. They have substantial restrictions for running the scheme but are very keen to optomise any angle of making as much profit as possible, may be stretching the boundaries within the scheme requirements. Could come very close to doing the very thing CORGI were critised for with additional commercial activities. As long as CAPITA concentrate on running an economic gas safety register within the HSE scheme requirements and don't start spreading out to commercial activities which compete against thier registered members, I will not object.

Sorry, but thats what price fixing is. When two or more businesses agree with each other a minimum rate to optomise on profit.

so what do taxi companies do?.
i dont really use them but are they not pretty much the same price per job?.

Problem is if the companies get together and agree not to compete with one another and fix the same price. Therefore none competitive market.

but there always busy! no?.

supermarkets the same, none any diffrent priced overall from the other, you just choose where to buy from.
go to the dentist and there all the same price for a filling etc.
think its called profesional rate charter?.
