I recently discovered that where I am there's 2 types/grades of soil pipe, one is used above ground and one is for below ground. There's a substantial price difference between them as well. This might not be the case in the UK however.
 
The one for below ground in the UK is usually coloured orangey-brown. Any other colour should be UV stabilised and suited for use above ground.
