Gas Engineer

Had a bit of a bust up with a cust today.Went out last week to a tenants boiler it was an old 16-22.I told her that most of the parts were obsolete including the case seal.I charged her a stupid low call out charge & said i would meet the landlord there to quote for new boiler.
The tenant phoned me today saying they called another engineer in who fixed it.
Does anyone on here still work on these?

I would if I was self-employed but because they contain asbestos my employer won't let me touch them!

Someone added it on here. I have a feeling it was Croppie but could be wrong

Cheers, ive just printed a list of ACM"S of tinternet & the n/heats are on there.I"ll send it to them with there money back & an apology. That"s what you have to do when your on checkatrade

Apology? Money back?!? What do you mean?

Why are you giving them an apology and YOUR money back??

Confused? I am so you don't want to work on an appliance that's obsolete and has asbestos, but you want to apologies and give a refund what?

I Know, but if I don't he's going to give me bad feedback, along the lines I was trying to get a boiler change out of it,when the boiler could be repaired.anything for a quiet life.

That is horrendous. I would've done the same as you

Sod that. You've acted responsibly. Give them nothing. I'm sure you can reply to a negative comment.

Reminds me why we don't participate in these trusted trader schemes. We have a hard enough time as it is without worrying about a potentially ill informed opinion that could scupper sales.

So what was actually wrong with it? They're positive pressure too if it's the fan flued one. They're like a box of death. Ha ha! A mate has one in the house he's just bought and I've told him to change it ASAP. He won't though.

Looked like the earth shield was chewed up. Not my problem anymore.i can sleep in my bed.

What a great boiler these were back in the day. Havent seen one for a while.

Major safety issues to look out for if you spot one..

1)Case is positive pressure so look around the edges ofr tell tale signs of leakage i.e condensation/darkened areas/feel for draught

2)Whip he brown side panels off at the back. They are decorative trims to cover pipework.

Check backplate of boiler around connections as prone to corrosion leading to big hole in boiler backplate through which POC can blow !

3) Make sure that when the boiler is powered off, the white rodgers two stage gas valve is truly shut off and isnt leeching gas out to the pilot or main.

I have seen some of these explode and almost rip the boiler off the wall due to gas build up in case due to passing white rodgers valve>call for heat> ignition sequence>kaboom...screams from customer>run>fire brigade !
