Our boiler was installed in Oct 2011 and the total cost was over £2000. For the last month the hot water on economy 7 has not been coming through and we were told that the lower, 2nd immersion heater was corroded and needed replacing. The boiler is only for heating water and there is no gas in the property.
Option 1. We were quoted nearly £600 for a new immersion heater, including labour and VAT.
Option 2. We were told that we should install a top range water softener which would descale the immersion heater and resolve the problem. We were told that this would cost £1700 with labour and VAT.
Option 3. The plumber who installed the original boiler expressed surprise that it is still working and suggest replacing it with another one at a cost of around £2000 with labour and VAT.

Obviously I know nothing about plumbing and hate to be throwing good money after bad. Each option seems to be expensive and I have no trust that any will work longer-term. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Prices seem a tad high to me, where are you based?
Also if the plumber who installed your boiler in 2011 is surprised it's still working??? 4 years old? You should get at least 10 years out of a well maintained boiler if not more

Thanks Alex. I am in London. I also think that the plumber is not genuine in his approach. I don't think he realizes I have his paperwork relating to the boiler installation 4 years ago for the previous flat owners.

The question remains however how do I move forward. At the moment I just fear that whatever decision I make it will be wrong and it will cost me a lot of money...

The way to move forward is to get a couple more quotes, without seeing the job eyes on its hard to say but the prices given seem expensive!

Thank you Ch4 plumbing! I guess this is what we will need to do.
