My mixer bar shower gave up the ghost on its thermostatic mixer valve, so the water wouldn't heat up. I was advised to replace the mixer bar so I got a Briston Frenzy. It requires me to screw in a mounting plate over the existing pipes. However, the previous installed mounts are directly soldered over the inlet pipes. How would I go about removing these the most practical way?

1. I'd be very surprised if the old ones are soldered on. More likely to be held on by olives which have been compressed onto the pipes.
2. There are flats on the threaded part of the fitting. Hold the flange part with one spanner (or screw it back to the wall) and try unscrewing with another spanner on the flats.

Okay managed that, now I have a sleeve on the copper pipe which prevents the mount from coming free.

1. They are called olives, and need to be removed:
2. Various removal methods:
2a. Grab with a pair of grips and twist backwards and forwards around the pipe, while easing then towards the open end of the pipe.
2b. Cut olive diagonally across its width with a hacksaw most of the way through, then put a screwdriver in the slot you have created, and twist to break the olive. Whatever you do, don't nick the pipe.
2c. Unscrew fittings from wall and slide forward. With a lever under each side of the fitting, force them forwards to strip the olives of the pipes.
2d. Buy an olive cutter or olive remover and remove.

Thank you, sorted now 🙂

Ideal Logic 24, Previous problem was that the hot water was only cold or barely warm if the heating was in use. If heating was off and boiler cold then would get hot water most of the time. Changing the flow cartridge about 2 years ago (when I moved in) solved this problem enough to suffer it as...
