Hi. I have an internal soil pipe in my kitchen which runs from the bathroom directly above. It is encased in a plasterboard box. When I took the old kitchen out this pipe is sticking out of the wall which contains the soil pipe. I don't know what it is and I'm reluctant to unscrew the end. There is a faint smell of sewerage coming from the soil pipe and often there has been an unpleasant smell coming up the sink hole. The image has come out on its side but you can see the skirting is below it. Please does anyone know what this is for and what I should do with it IMG-20160701-WA0000.jpg

It is a compression type coupling with a blanking cap with screw access. I think it has possibly been left as an access rodding point. Either that or it is a branch that has been used previously, is no longer needed and has been capped.

Ah thank you very much. So I can just fit the new cupboard around it. Lucky you in the Channel Islands. I adore Guernsey

Now you need to figure out where the smell is coming from. If you suspect a leak and the smell is around the boxing you'll need to either open up the boxing and check for leaks or open ends/bosses on the stack. If you have access to a camera probe you could drill a hole in the boxing for a quick check.

I love it here in Guernsey too. It's been raining a lot this summer though, as it is right now. Still can't complain too much!

Start with compression joint that is right up against the boxing, is the smell coming from there

I was stupid enough not to check the position of the pipes under the tiles when installing a toilet and drilled right through the center of a 16 mm copper water pipe. I exposed the pipe by removing a ~30cm section of the plastic sleeve and a ~10 cm section of the pipe around the hole. Several...

Hello all, I’m replacing a concrete paving slab patio in the back yard. The original patio used 50mm deep concrete slabs on hardcore & sand. I’m planning to pour a 100mm deep concrete patio on 100mm hardcore. In order to achieve the same final height to line up with the rest of the patio, I...

We run a community village hall and have a large kitchen provided for the use of hirers. This includes a Lincat SLR9 gas cooker which I believe is a 23.8Kw appliance with all six burners and oven on max. This was installed some 10 years ago and has passed all subsequent Gas Safety inspections as...
