there is nothing on the boiler that i can see that will allow me to overide anything

any advice appreciated

Well if heating coming on with hot water ,propably heating motorised valve by- passing,if staying on all the time 24hrs probably micro switch stuck on heating motorised valve or valve its self stuck in open position due to faulty syncron motor
If combi boiler will be another fault, require model

turn the boiler of at the power/fuse, you could then try turn on again to see if the problem has cleared itself. otherwise call an engineer.
