Is there a hw off wire from the programmer to the wiring ctr ?If there isn't it could have been wired up for hw to be permamently live to make the customer think htg works on its own.

Was it a Grudfoss UPS 2 you fitted by any chance? What make is the timer?

pump was as you say new grundfoss a rated and programmer iflo twin channel. electrician re wired junction box 3 times I think something is back feeding through the programmer but no idea how :-(

I had exactly the same issue the other week. I got though quite a few programmers as thought it was an issue with a batch of programmers. Turns out its an issue with the new Grundfos UPS 2.
Apparently according to Drayton tech support its a know issue. When the pump starts for some reason it draws a abnormally high current which causes the relays in the timer to fuse. Once this happens it is the end of your brand mew timer.
You can check the timer has fused by removing it from the back plate and doing a continuity check on the back of the timer between L and 3 or 4. They should be open circuit when removed.
The Drayton guy said they know it affects Drayton (iflo) and Danfoss timers, but were unaware of issues with other manufacturers. Draytons resolution was fit a Grundfos Alpha or a different brand pump.
Grundfos will not openly admit there is a fault however have a new version of the pump coming in September to address this issue. Hope this helps.

Some times I could seethe over supposed new technology that's should better for the environment.

It's only the UPS 2 causing the issue. No other pumps. I would suggest either fitting a Grundfos Alpha or a different brand. I did this and I had no issues. The likely hood is that it is probably affecting all timers that incorporate electronic relays. Don't think I would bother trying to find out which timers do and don't work with it, could get quite costly.

Sounds like a problem I had a few weeks ago. There was around 130v on the heating on wire coming from the mid pos valve head, even when disconnected from the wiring centre! If I nudged the valve lever with no demand it jumped over to heat on.

Checked over the wiring, all fine except for this 130 or so volts. Swapped the valve head which made no difference. In the end I fitted a different valve, can't remember if it was Hwell to Drayton or the other way around but it now works! I double checked the wiring which seemed fine and no call back.
