The English modal verbs are a subset of the English auxiliary verbs used mostly to express modality (properties such as possibility, obligation, etc.). They can be distinguished from other verbs by their defectiveness (they do not have participle or infinitive forms) and by their neutralization (that they do not take the ending -(e)s in the third-person singular).
The principal English modal verbs are can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, and must. Certain other verbs are sometimes, but not always, classed as modals; these include ought, had better, and (in certain uses) dare and need. Verbs which share only some of the characteristics of the principal modals are sometimes called "quasi-modals", "semi-modals", or "pseudo-modals".
Morning everyone,
The hot water tap in the bathroom has decided to throw a tantrum and doesn't turn off, I have turned the mains off for now. The taps in the basin and tub are pretty bog standard and they tend to drip slightly unless I fully turn them off making it hard for a child to turn...
Hi all,
I hope this is the right category.
I woke up this morning in a cold house with no hot hot either. (It's a rent flat).
My boiler Potterton Prima F50 is continuously running, I can see fire inside, it's making the usual noise apart of that gurgling water noise.
I checked the...

After a bit of advice this boiler has really thrown me.
Called to a Baxi Solo He 18 that the customer would have to reset 5 times + for the boiler to stay lit it seemed to be lighting for literally a second then going out.
I stripped it down expecting an electrode fault but nothing...
Working on the above boiler.
Oil pump runs, wash pressure then full pressure. Sparks but won't ignite.
When I pull the photocell out I can see it sparking but doesn't look like it's sparking properly.
Cleaned and reset the electrodes but still won't ignite.
Is it worth swapping the...
Hi all,
My central heating combines downstairs underfloor and upstairs radiators. Downstairs works fine but the pump serving the rads upstairs comes on correctly when called by the thermostat, but very often won't switch off when the 'stat stops calling for heat, or even when the programmer...
I have a leak coming from under the bath and is coming through concrete floor/wall egde. When the boiler/heating is turned on it temporarily stops. The heaters are now slowly stopping to heat up. When the water mains is turned off, it stops but this is not practical as it turned off the upstairs...

I have a Grohe boiling water unit and tap. It has been working well for a couple of weeks. All of a sudden there was a funny noise and the tap just kept emptying the hot water out. The tap is turned off. I have had to turn water supply off just before the filter. There is a new filter installed...
Hi all,
I have wet UFH 4 Zones. I used to have HIVE controlling it but I wanted a better way of controlling Zones as I was wasting money having all 4 zones at the same temp.
I have since dumped HIVE and have had emmeti actuators, Wiring centre and RF thermostats fitted.
My problem is that it...

Hi,
I drained our vented system yesterday to fit new valves to bathroom radiator. When draining I noticed the F&E tank did not empty, I had the supply off and all rad bleeds open, the rest of system emptied. When I try to fill back up I can't. I tried bleeding the rads but although 3 of 8 hissed...

Just moved into a new house with a leaky tap, and want to change the washer over. Easy, right?
Turned the mains off, but the cold (leaky) tap in downstairs loo won't stop running. All other taps (kitchen, bathroom etc. hold AND cold) went off. I left it running for maybe 15 minutes...

Any help appreciated. I had a plumber come in and disconnect underfloor heating in the conservatory, and replace it with a large radiator. The underfloor heating was ran off the gas boiler and had its own thermostat. He said that he would put it on the same system as the other radiators so they...
Lets say I have a new boiler installed into a system which hasn't been very well flushed (or worse - not flushed), but I install a good filter.
If I clean the filter often, will the filter be able to protect the boiler?
I know that flushing is important and I've described an unlikely scenario...
