The English modal verbs are a subset of the English auxiliary verbs used mostly to express modality (properties such as possibility, obligation, etc.). They can be distinguished from other verbs by their defectiveness (they do not have participle or infinitive forms) and by their neutralization (that they do not take the ending -(e)s in the third-person singular).
The principal English modal verbs are can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, and must. Certain other verbs are sometimes, but not always, classed as modals; these include ought, had better, and (in certain uses) dare and need. Verbs which share only some of the characteristics of the principal modals are sometimes called "quasi-modals", "semi-modals", or "pseudo-modals".
We just had our meters changed from prepayment to smart meters. The boiler was lit after with no leaks, but has subsequently gone out and won't stay lit anymore.
There is still a good gas supply to the cooker so I don't think it's a supply issue.
Any ideas???
Hi, this is my first post to this esteemed forum so please excuse any faux pas.
The red wheel head gate compression valve has seized half on-half off so I have unthreaded the nuts holding it in place (wasn't easy) ready to replace with a 22mm Pegler ball valve (bought from S...x - the only chain...
Evening All,
I went to fit a new macerator today - a job I usually try and avoid. After two hours of dismantling boxing and wrestling with an inaccessible fused spur I got it in, switched it on and nothing! It's got power and water. I've checked everything. What can it be? I assume there's a...
Hi all, I removed a radiator downstairs to wallpaper when I put it back on the he24 will not fire up at all and shows an error code L9.
The pressure had dropped to 0 so I refilled the system. This happened when I removed a radiator before but last time I shut off all the rads except the one I...
I wonder if anyone can help diagnose a problem I'm having.
My hot water won't come on by itself.
The system is a pretty bog-standard gravity fed type with the cylinder, pump, 2 port valve etc in a first-floor airing cupboard.
If I switch on the heating by itself it works.
If I switch on the...
Afternoon chaps, I'm at a lose.
I have just come away from a job wlempty pockets as couldn't fix the problem.
Scenario.
Glow worm 30ci combi won't fire. It sparks, fires on low flame but goes out after 5-10 seconds and then goes to F1. With all cases off right back to burner, it stays on. So...
Morning all,
This is my first post and I confess I did not even know about checking boiler pressure until yesterday, so any help would be much appreciated.
So, my Ideal Mini HE C24 boiler stopped working last night. The lock out light is red. There is a click, a blue spark of light behind its...
Hello All
I was called out to a property to clean a fully pumped open vented s plan heated system.
After the clean I found that one or two of the rads upstairs woukd not heat up. One rad in particular had heat coming to it on the feed but the return was competely blocked.
We flushed the...
Morning chaps. I had a call with boiler not working from a customer.
2 CH zone valves and 1 HW. All drayton.
Honeywell single channel for hw and 2 danfos tp5 programmer stats for heating. Greenstar 40cdi boiler.
I found one of the heating heads had come off the body, when I reattached it...
Hi
First post!
I’m having an intermittent problem with our central heating. It’s a fully pumped system almost 30 years old. It has 3 motorised valves for hot water, downstairs CH and upstairs CH.
The problem is that when all the timers are turned off, the pump keeps running. The boiler isn’t...
Dudley japtic syphon. The first flush works fine, the cistern fills up fully straight afterwards, but when you try to flush again it doesn't flush. You can try a few more times and it still won't flush. Leave it 3-4 minutes and it flushes fine again.
Should I just replace the syphon or washer...
Help/advice?
Ideal Classic FF 250 Boiler - have changed the fan & PCB. Fan comes on, pilot sparks but no gas at pilot. Pilot injector clear. Is this something fixable with the pilot solenoid? Or is a new complete gas valve required. Rapid help required as obviously heating in house is down and...
Hi,
I've joined the forum hoping that someone can help me out, and give some advice on how to get a radiator to heat up. I have a closed circuit heating system, that is served by aconventional Worcester 24i boiler, running 10 radiators. It's on 15mm pipe and the install is about 8 years old...
Hi all
I'm after a bit of advice, a few weeks ago I had the hot water on and after the programmer turned off the boiler stayed on and was venting into the central heating header tank as the pump wasn't running. The only way to turn it off was to turn the power off at the fuse box.
If power is...
Hi, I have a vaillant boiler. Now the weather is warmer the central heating won't work. I have hot water only. I can't get the radiators to come on again until the autumn. Is there anything I can do to make the radiators come on just for an hour in the morning during summer. I've had it serviced...
Morning everyone,
The hot water tap in the bathroom has decided to throw a tantrum and doesn't turn off, I have turned the mains off for now. The taps in the basin and tub are pretty bog standard and they tend to drip slightly unless I fully turn them off making it hard for a child to turn...
Hi all,
I hope this is the right category.
I woke up this morning in a cold house with no hot hot either. (It's a rent flat).
My boiler Potterton Prima F50 is continuously running, I can see fire inside, it's making the usual noise apart of that gurgling water noise.
I checked the...

After a bit of advice this boiler has really thrown me.
Called to a Baxi Solo He 18 that the customer would have to reset 5 times + for the boiler to stay lit it seemed to be lighting for literally a second then going out.
I stripped it down expecting an electrode fault but nothing...
Working on the above boiler.
Oil pump runs, wash pressure then full pressure. Sparks but won't ignite.
When I pull the photocell out I can see it sparking but doesn't look like it's sparking properly.
Cleaned and reset the electrodes but still won't ignite.
Is it worth swapping the...
Hi all,
My central heating combines downstairs underfloor and upstairs radiators. Downstairs works fine but the pump serving the rads upstairs comes on correctly when called by the thermostat, but very often won't switch off when the 'stat stops calling for heat, or even when the programmer...
