Mastic Remover

Anyone got favourite (i.e. really effective) 'stuff' they use to remove old silcon and non-silicon mastic around baths/sinks etc.

not really, if you use a bog standard silicone remover from b+q or a name branded product. they both do what is says on the tin i.e. remove silicone. it also removes the seal between the 2 surfaces.
in the case of baths and basins we need that seal. you only really have 2 choices to clean up messy silicone.
1) sharp blade cut it off nicely, still leaves the seal. i use this method on s/s sinks and the like on worktops
2) totally remove all the old silicone and replace, use a good quality silicone like ct1, and some silicone spoons (they cost 2 quid) i discovered them about 3 years ago and have never enjoyed using silicone as much. leaves a really smart finish.

my fav's my thumb-nail, if the goings really tough a scraper or 1" chisel used carefully.
recently bought a plastic sillicon scraper from merchant for a couple of quid and to be honest its as good as all three above, it does bottom, side and corner in one blow. might not last too long ie one bath but for £2 put it on the job.

I've found that the problem with the silicone eaters is that they need to be rinsed really well with water after using them.

I prefer to use a snap off blade knife to carefully cut it out. For really stuborn bits on tiles a coarse scotchbrite pad can help.

Thanks gang for the feedback. I've used all the methods myself but just wondered if I was missing out on something that was easier and less hassle or messy - seems not.

mine's called adam, me apprentice,

there's also a big line of 'apprentices' willing to work for nowt on this site for the 'experience', thinking about it thats cheaper than me £2 plastic knife?.
