Gas meter removal??

Hi all. How many of you honestly remove the meter when having to adapt pipework??

Reason I ask is due to the company I work with don't unless it's right next to the meter.

Why not if its a compression? I know source of ignition won't be there but tutor was saying its to do with allowing a larger amount of air into the pipework.

I remove it if I'm soldering within say 2 metres of it

never removed one when doing a cooker point unless its close to meter!

Only when soldering onto the union, well if the tail is held in the cradle via the groove and held by those snap off bolts and washers.

And using my crocodile earth lead :wink_smile:

Is that what that green and yellow lead is with the clips either end? I use it to hang my towels on to dry j the back of the van lol

My mate got suspended from BG for allowing his apprentice to finish off soldering a joint on the meter union many years ago while the meter was disconnected but right under the pipe. Blew the lad about 20 yards and burnt all his face and chest. It was an industrial meter and still on lead it was that long ago, but when I did my apprenticeship with him he was paranoid so I always use a cap inside or remove and cover if working within a couple of metres.

I either use compression ISO valve and then solder after or put a cap in the meter. Sometimes.

once you find a main with some voltage on it, temp cont bonds seem a good idea.

i never cap the meter, whats the point with speedfit?

Always couldn't stand the embarrassment of meter exploding due to flashback but no if using compression or as AW says SF[emoji79]

Always if soldering. One of the lads I used to work with had a meter go bang. He needed new pants after that. Sort of put me off taking the risk.

Every now and again someone gets injured or killed then everyone else does things properly for a wee while that's just what we do, I got a belt from a water pipe many many yrs ago when I cut through a sink supply, since then I'm about the only guy I know who uses the continuity bond when cutting a water pipe as well as a gas one, you will be lucky loads of times, but you only need to be unlucky once, it's everyone's choice

Always remove and cap regulator when soldering.......its the way i was trained and the way i will continue to work. My hobbies are dangerous enough .

So increasing air/gas mix in the pipe is a good thing? Are you saying tour tutor says you should remove meter even when using just a compression fitting?

When you remove the reg you have to sometimes remove the lead plug that keeps it in place on the meter bracket.

Do yous replace it with a newun ??

99/100 times I remove the meter as its so easy to do. If I'm feeling particularly rough I will do a quick soldered joint if I'm happy little air has entered the pipework. But officially not
