Hi, this is my first post on this forum so hello.

I have started to plan to put a downstairs toilet in our utility room, and I'm currently checking my option for the waste.

I'm not a plumber as you might be able to tell.. But it appears that all rain water drains and waste pipes from the toilet run to the same manhole in the back garden.

from what I have briefly read this afternoon, I should have separate drains for each.

My question is/are...

can I run "new" waste pipes into this drain?

if not, do I have options?

Im sorry if this is covered in plumbing 101, but I'm reading conflicting info online.
i would like to get some opinions from some experienced people before I pull the trigger and pick the phone up.

cheers for taking your time to read this.

Lift the manhole cover off, flush paper down other toilets in the house, if you see the paper then yep your ok.

A combined system is basically Foul, with surface water added, it was very common to do this.
Any new foul connection is permitted subject to regs. and Local water company's permission (and fee) if it's direct into a common drain. (shared with neighbours)

Adding another surface connection is not allowed usually.
It has to go to soakaway.

Think he's talking about installing a new Wc. which should be fine, connecting to grey and surface combined drainage. Not sure what you ment about "it has to go to a soakaway?

Cheers for putting my mind at ease guys.

is there a protocol for routing the waste pipe through the utility room wall at toilet level to outside, then under ground and into drain, or is straight under the floor inside the utility then into the drain?

A guy at work told me you can't take it straight outside like the upstairs toilet.
