Discuss Additional Thermostats or smart solution? in the USA area at PlumbersForums.net

Hi,

We have one programmable thermostat in the landing of our house. This turns on/off all the heating rads and towel rails for the upstairs.

I don't know if this is odd or genius, but effectively it means once the landing is up to temp the rads in the bedrooms turn off and obviously don't turn back on again until the landing temp is beneath whatever the thermostat is programmed for.

Is there a solution I can add to our main bedroom and the nursery that would somehow send a signal to the Landing Thermostat and tell it to power up the heating?

For example, we'd like a stable temperature in the nursery but no means of influencing the heating from within there...

Can thermostats talk to each other in this way? It wouldn't be feasible to wire additional thermostats back to the heat pump controller.

Thanks!

Use a wire free one. Put the receiver where the current stat is and the thermostat in the nursery.
Thanks, Can a receiver also be a thermostat? I'd like to retain the functionality of the thermostat in the landing, but add thermostats to the master bed and nursery than activate the landing thermostat (if possible)

We have Ambiente thermostats presently, is the compatability for wiring in pretty much the same?

No, you would need something more high tech (expensive) to do that.

Ok,

I assume the existing thermostats are all wired back to the heat pump/heating controller.

Is it a case that for a wireless system I'd have some kind of (wired) hub to the heating controller then just replace all the existing thermostats with wireless ones?

Something like the Drayton Wiser system. Not fitted it but I think it might be along the lines of what you are looking for.

Thanks all the downstairs thermostats are wired to the UFH controller. Any idea where the u/s thermostat would be wired (For rads/towel rails).. It's exactly the same thermostat but not sure how to find out where it's wired in to?

do you have a buffer vessel connected to you heat pump a few pictures please ?? Kop
Sure thing, it looks like there's quite a lot going on in there so wouldn't know where to start!

There is also the UFH controller under the stairs but fairly sure the upstairs towel/rad zone is connected elsewhere (at least I hope so)

Thanks

Theres alot of controls there already I would be careful adding others ?? heat pumps like a steady flow though them to allow the exchange of heat into the system you may find you need open loops on your underfloor heating , if you're shutting others off and or a buffer vessel . Kop

Yeah, it looks busy.

But... The whole ground floor is on UFH and controlled from a box under the stairs.
It's only the upstairs that's rads/rails, single zone, and activated by the thermostat at the landing.

If I can find where the landing therm is wired back to I can add a receiver there and use as many wireless thermostats as I like for the upstairs circuit?

Just to bump this thread, as I still need advice on how to replace the upstairs thermostat with a wireless receiver, given the current thermostat will need to be replaced with a wireless one...

Any idea how I could identify the u/s thermo wiring at the heat pump controller, to swap it out with the wireless receiver?

Thanks everyone
