I was just pondering about my new system design, which will be fitted at the beginning of 2018.

Is it possible to run an unvented cylinder with a vented system boiler? Just wondering as it has to be far less hassle/least likely to leak than a pressurised CH set up?

I already have an unvented system in place so guess it would be a case of removing the large tank feeding the vented cylinder

Feel free to poke holes in my theory

If you are asking if you can use an existing open vented boiler to heat a new unvented cylinder?
The answer is yes. As long as it is fully pumped and not Gravity.

Sorry I should have been more clear

New system or conventional boiler - new unvented cylinder. Can I keep a header tank in place so as not to have to pressurise the CH circuits. My thinking is that it will be much more serviceable and better for the longevity of the joints in the longer term....

As above you don't have to seal the system, you can go old school and use an f and e tank

Thanks Shaun - Is this a wise option from a plumbers perspective. It will take less work to keep it like this - I'm just wondering if i am missing out on any benefits of pressurised?

If done correctly eg no pumping over and correct feed placement

There both the same, just don't want it sucking in air as this speeds up corrosion

My current set up isn't set up properly at all given the time it takes to eradicate air in the system (cylinder, pump and diverter valve in airing cupboard, boiler downstairs in kitchen a room away). However, working on the assumption my pump will be mounted on or near the unvented cylinder (all to be fitted in attached garage)... then my plumber should be able to reroute it, to make it more 'free'. I have also bought a Spirotech deaerator which should help?

Best to get Plumbing sorted rather than fit Spiro.
Use it now you bought it but there is no substitute for the system working correctly.
If Plumber is re-piping system to move pump, it shouldn't be a problem after he/she's been.
