Hi, I am based in Aylesbury, can come and look on 2nd January!! pm me and we'll make it happen!! Had same issue few months ago, easy fix, just need to come and check it is definitely what I think it is before ordering part!!
 
Make sure and check the line strainer in combination valve first
 
Thats what I was thinking!! builder not taping up the pipe ends!! will be first thing to check!!
not telling how to suck an egg Jase. But pipework into the softener is smal for the job would be better if it had a high flow head and connected with 3/4 hoses. Or direct 22mm.
there also should be some filters ( like you find on a washing machine) on the inlets or inside the softener head.

but like you say filter on pressure reducing valve first call.
