Getting a job as a plumber with a criminal record?

I don't know if this is the right place to post but wanted to post it

I am getting sentenced in 2 weeks and told to expect about 2 years. Because of the length I was told I would get to do a course for getting a job after I get out.

Most of the courses are about bricklaying and plumbing but I don't know how hard it would be to get a job like that now or in a year or two especially with a criminal record or having a chance of being an apprentise.

If I did get to do a course would it be good when I am going for a job or would they see it was done in prison. Does it matter much about having a criminal record if you want to be a plumber? Would it be a good job for me to try and get? If you were taking people on would you give somebody like me a job?

It depends on what you've been sentenced for. I wouldn't look to employ someone that's been done for any sort of dishonesty.

Most employers and agencies now ask for either a basic or enhanced CRB check dependent on where you may be employed.
Both bricklaying and plumbing can give you employment but probably as self employed.

did a job for an old builder today, he was telling me the guy who had worked for him for the past 15 years is an ex-con. he told me he was the best employee he ever had and that it was something to do with having a second chance.
he has recently helped set him up on his own.!!

We used to work with an agency who specialised in finding work for ex-convicts, Some of them have gone on to be great employees with a perfect record. One or two relapsed into their old ways and we had to get rid.

Two observations - firstly, treat each case on its merits. No two people are the same, and people end up in prison for all sorts of reasons. Most of us do daft things when we are young, and often the difference is only whether we get caught.

Secondly, if you don't believe that people are capable of doing their time and then coming out and going straight, you may as well lock every criminal up for life. I'm not saying that sinner becomes a saint, but they have a damn sight more chance if someone gives them a fair shot.

Look if you were arrested for some sort of political protest all well and good.
Whilst I agree totally with the principle that everything that is past is history and everyone should get another chance.

However, those who think it will be no problem are not employers.

Tamz and I are.
We both say (depending on the offence) we probably would not employ someone who we knew had been to prison/ criminal conviction.
The people who work in people's houses are put in a great position of trust. customers give us their keys, leave the workers in their home and count on us - us being the owners of the company.
We can't take that risk in our customer's homes.
I think it might be different if you were employed on site work.

I agree with Ray - I have made more than my fair share of mistakes....
but the fact is all the men who work for us are left in customers homes on their own and trusted with keys t some of those houses so we need to be 100% confident of their honesty.

It's for GBH - I have been in trouble before but not in prison - just did community payback It happened months ago now and I am a different person now after thinking about what I did but I can't change it.

I didn't really give a stuff before but seeing how upset my family are and seeing what I was like on CCTV wasn't good. Before this I was in court just for being drunk and fighting and doing stupid stuff and driving too and took a car once but not for anything dishonest or thieving.

But I haven't been in any trouble since this happened and thought alot about how I ended up doing this and the trouble I've been in and know I have to be a different person after I get out and that's why I'm thinking what I can do about getting a job after all this

Honest answer, don't know, and haven't given it any thought. I could say probably not, but I don't know you other than the two posts I've read.

I believe everybody makes mistakes, and shouldn't be judged on that fact that they have made a mistake. But having just re-read your second post then I would have to say no. I see stealing a car as dishonest and thieving.

But then that's just my opinion.

Problem is you'll be going up against lists of guys who don't have records and have the same skills. So who are they going to employ?

You would probably be best off keeping quiet about it and going self employed and work that way when you're done. Your offence isn't uncommon, I don't loads of guys who have been done for gbh and I have no problem working with them.

Good luck! Lad I knew went in for 5, came out different bloke. Straight as he could be after doing 5 years, set up own joinery business now has about 12 lads and owns a few houses. He got everything taken through proceeds of crime so fresh start. Also.... Went in a phat git, now ripped health freak!

There were 471 sex offences reported in Bournemouth and Poole division in 2008/09. Of these, 320 were reported to have happened in Bournemouth.
Out of the total sex offences recorded in the two towns, 123 were rapes, 198 were sexual assaults, 22 were other serious sexual offences and 128 non-serious sexual offences.

Get ratted on your stag night and flash your tackle in the street? You could find yourself on the sex-offenders register.

why don't you do the course and keep your nose clean, then speak to your gaffa and try and get an apprentiship maybe as a maintainence plumber in the prison? mega long shot what with crb and the likes but they know you and know your history and more importantly that your on the straight and narrow
