What is the reason they give a minimum recommended room size? Are there any dangers involved in putting in a room that's smaller than recommended?

Yes. It is a flueless appliance. It needs the correct ventilation.
Without that, the air will become vitiated and CO will be produced. On top of that the CO2 levels could become too high.
Both are a danger.

My mum just downsized her house and wants to use one in a much smaller living room. Have told her not to use until we check the size against minimum room volumes in manual
