Morning Guys

I have been asked to fit a water softener for by an elderly lady. She has a budget of £200, not a lot your thinking and that leads on to my question. I have seen these inline softeners but am not too convinced. Would appreciate any feedback advice.

Do you mean a proper water softener or a scale inhibitor/water conditioner? What is you customer trying to achieve - soft water, or just to protect one or more appliances from scale formation?

I don't think that it is possible to get properly softened water on your budget.

Hi Ray

I hear what your saying and I agree, I think shes more interested in longevity of appliances and her washing coming out anything other than cardboard.

I am a bit cynical about water conditioners/scale inhibitors. From feedback over the tradecounter, the Hydropath Hydroflow HS38 seems to be fairly well thought of, although its quite expensive compared to the cheapo magnetic ones. I don't think it will make much difference to the washing though. You would need a proper water softener for that.

You/she will get nothing for £200 that will soften water, sadly.

The so called water conditioners are a con and many plumbers fit these thinking that they may help to soften the water. No way!

Have a look here to see for yourself.

I am afraid she will have to bite the bullet and buy a real water softener, the low range ones run from £400. Having said that she will really get soft water and will not regret paying out the extra.
