water softener

Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations in hard water. The resulting soft water requires less soap for the same cleaning effort, as soap is not wasted bonding with calcium ions. Soft water also extends the lifetime of plumbing by reducing or eliminating scale build-up in pipes and fittings. Water softening is usually achieved using lime softening or ion-exchange resins but is increasingly being accomplished using nanofiltration or reverse osmosis membranes.

Whirlpool Water Softener Making Water Smell USA

My water stinks. Smells musty. I installed a Whirlpool water softener mid February of this year ('23) and it's smelled ever since. So here's the story: we live on a farm in southeast PA. Our well is 60' deep with the water table around 10'. Two houses supplied from the same well. One day I...

    Unvented cylinder with water softener

Is there a definitive answer to this? We have a stainless steel everflo unvented cylinder hooked up to a Worcester Bosch boiler, and are thinking of getting a water softener as were in quite a hard water area. I've looked around, but can't seem to find a clear answer as to whether a water...

    Water softener waste pipe discharge

Can the discharge and overflow pipes from a water softener go to surface water drainage (soakaway in my case) instead of foul? I'm first of all trying to find out if they are guidelines or in Building Regs, alternatively, I can probably run some calculations to compare how much regen water will...

URGENT Intermittent clunking noise in or near water softener

Noise seems to stop when softener is bypassed, not 100% certain. Noise is intermittent, a thwack/thump we can feel in the inlet pipe. It's only for a few hours a day, and never when water is running. Harvey's water softener is 4 years old and water is from mains, not a tank. Salt is not blocked...

Water softener leaking through drain (not overflow)

Hello, as is common with most newbies I've arrived with a problem. Our water softener is about 18 months old, a BWT WS355 in an insulated outside cabinet. It's probably the third we've had - been here a very long time and always had a softener. I installed it myself, just connecting to existing...

    Water Softener Recommendations?

Hello Would love some general guidance on what I should be looking out for in the market when purchasing a water softener? I live in a 2 bed flat, with just me and my partner, and would like to think we are 'water considerate'. We've never owned a dishwasher, so benefit of the device is...

    Water softener for mains supply

Hi all, as the title says, few months ago moved into a house where the water is way harder than expected. We did not expect it because we lived in this area previously and did not have issues with the water back then, even though it's the same mains water supplier. I have done a test strip for...

    Water Softener Maintenance

Hi, We inherited a water softener in our new house and I have no idea what shape it's in and if it requires maintenance. We have some light water stains around the faucets, but nothing major so far (I grew up with hard water so I know how things can look like). My main concern is that there...

    Compact format water softener

I rent an apartment in Santiago, Chile where the water is very hard. For the last few years, I've been using the building's laundry on the ground floor but this costs a fortune over the long run and is frankly a ballache when you're on the 12th floor. A colossal waste of time. Not to mention the...

Water Softener Install - how long should this take?

Apologies for the self interested thread, but I would very much appreciate the advice of you knowledgeable folks. Water Softener Part 2

Hi all, As I'm a little out of my comfort zone where plumbing is concerned, I'd like to ask you all for some advice. Water Softener

Hi all, My name is Richard, I'm a reasonably practical chap and not afraid to give most things a try (except perhaps electronics, ahich have always confused the life out of me!) but spend most of my, now plentiful, free time in my workshop playing with my (very) small fleet of vintage and...
