Ofgem are considering an alternative to MCS for the Domestic RHI :) - implies that there's still going to be some money beyond March 2016..

My opinion is that the CPS bodies are more than capable of certifying installers, the question is though, to what standards.

Perhaps MCS should simply become a standards body..

Heres your opportunity to have your say: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications-and-updates/stage-2-consultation-mcs-equivalence-domestic-renewable-heat-incentive-scheme
Surely this is what is happening now, the only involvement we have with MCS is the yearly OFGEM fee, everything else goes through the CPS body.

Personally, albeit there's a lot of buerocracy with MCS, it's doing a reasonable job at keeping standards at the forefront of the industry. Yes, there are plenty the don't follow the rules, but that's the same with every industry. The majority are better informed and have a standard (even if it's not quite right) to conform to.

Without the scheme, the renewables industry would be in a complete mess, systems would be getting slapped in without consideration (as they are in the fossil fuel world) and there would be no come backs mechanism for the client.

To introduce another scheme which operates under the same standards ( which is what they appear to be consulting) is pointless and confusing.

MCS should be consulting with manufacturers and industry experts about how we can use the technology with more flexibility to more of an advantage. Particularly, solar thermal being used for suitable space heating applications and sizing of heat pumps with supplementary heat sources for peak demand.

The sooner they get rid of mcs the better any system that discriminates against the sole trader whilst favoring the bigger double glazing companies isn't good for the industry
There's talk of a trust mark scheme for renewables hopefully that'll simplify the ridiculous paper trail involved with mcs.

Sole traders aren't discriminated. If you want to get involved, read up, get the policies in place and get assessed.

I did it on my own, you can too. Don't buy an off the shelf QMS and then moan it doesn't fit your business type, make your own to suit the business.

The problem is you have to put a bit of effort in, most people can't be bothered or run thier business in a disorganised manner but expect to be able to access public money's sources as a given.

The sole purpose of mcs was to discourage sole traders from entering the renewables market, cause we're bodgers innit

No it wasn't and isn't, there are lots of sole traders that are MCS certified and also a number of manufacturer based umbrella schemes.

As others have pointed out what it tries to do is to bring together the disparate standards into a single point of reference to ensure installations are designed and carried out to a minimum standard.

It does that reasonably well, though there is no real consumer protection if installations aren't up to standard so it could be improved AND streamlined dramatically.

We will have had 4 detailed procedural audits this year from various bodies, it's a PIA, though does keep up us on our toes :)
Ironically it's the (much) larger firms that have the opportunities to skimp on standards and cut corners.
