Hi guys Ted the plumber here first post, The other night i fitted an over bath shower i done it in hep20 plastic pipe/fittings and i used a chrome tail pipe in to the shower unit as i could not be bothered boring in to the wall, I recieved a phone call claiming that the fitting blew off the chrome pipe overnight and that i have flooded the house in response i said that it was not my fault as it was fine when i left it. Do you think i should charge agin for replacing the dodgy fitting? Thanks Ted

Chrome pipe and push fit.... Recipe for disaster.

Is this a sparky trying to wind us up, if so what a stupid idiot.

Well Ted the Plumber. You made a boo boo. Hope your insurance is up to date.

I am not a sparky guys as i said i am ted the PLUMBER!

Ah its a tiler then, I guess that you couldn't manage to drill a hole in the tile in the right place meaning you had to surface mount the pipework. It all makes sense now!

On a serious note to anybody thinking of doing some plastic plumbing, PLASTIC AND CHROME DON'T MIX, unless you remove the chrome or use a compression fitting. Plumbing 101.

I know for sure it was not my fault as on my 6month plumbing crash course i was taught that you can use hep20 fittings on copper/chrome pipe.

That's a shame. Have you done the 6 week sparkies crash course? They teach you how to wire a house using wet string and chewing gum.

I thought that some of you guys would be helpful but clearly my problem is too complicated for you to understand. I am going to find some REAL plumbers and get some good advice.

You had me going with the plumber bit, but then I knew you were having a laugh with push fit onto chrome pipe......just testing us were you?

On a more serious note, even though this may be a wind up, there will be a lot of people reading this that are not aware that you can't use push fit on chrome plated copper tube. Push fit fittings rely on the stainless steel grab ring being harder than the copper to hold them in place. Chrome is harder than stainless steel do the grab ring will not hold and the fitting will eventually come off. If you want to use push fit on plated copper you need to clean all of the chrome off. An easier method is to use a compression fitting.

While we're on the subject of changing the subject but staying on the subject..

What does everyone use to remove the chrome? If anyone has a recommendation of a really good type of file for this a link would be appreciated as my old tatty one is starting to take too long.

quick whizz round with a dremel sorts it no bother.

I use a sanding pad on my Fein Multimaster - takes about 3 mjns on 15 mm

I'm afraid telling you the type of file would break forum rules.

If you figure it out buy a decent one not one of those cheap sets with the plastic handles that are good for nothing.

Angle grinder makes light work, but would leave the chrome on and use compression.

I have a double sided bahco file/rasp that makes light work of chrome, and I ALWAYS strip and solder, never ever ever use comp fittings on it (dont trust them under floors or in walls).
