I know you're meant to be a certain distance from push-fit before soldering (a meter?) but was wondering if that stuff would mean you could be closer if need be?

you can get away with 400mm without to much bother, i would just rap a wet rag around the pipework before the fitting and cool it down as soon as possible. Not really seen that barrier gel used.

Have got the barrier gel and it works, not sure how close you can go to a push fit, but I know if I spray it on copper and burner immediately to the left and hand immediately to the right of the gel I don't get burned. Similar product is used by stunt men so it does work., there is also a similar product out for the initial treatment of burns and that definitely does work.
