Over the years I have collected pipes and a few Hot Water Cylinders from my DIY efforts.
Having now accumulated enough to become a space problem I really should get rid.

Is pipe thats been painted going to be of interest to the scrap metal merchants?
Should I be removing the Immersion Heaters and brass fittings from the HWC's before I try my luck?

After that I need to get rid of the wood I have thought might come in handy but never did!

Thanks Gentlemen.

No problem with painted tube just make sure there are no brass fittings on it (reduces price) weight cylinders and tube in separately
Tube is heavy copper cylinders a lower price.
weight brass in separately.
Unless your already registered at scrap yard take id with you, payment is either by cheque or bank payment.
Tho some scap yards offer a cheque cashing facility (at a price!)

Thanks for that advice very helpful and appreciated.
Guess removing the Immersion heater from the cylinder is also a good idea.

Don’t bother removing immersion, they weigh whole thing and have a price for cylinders per kg.
Often they shake it and if full of scale they split it open with an axe and empty it out!!

Yes remove the foam, I do this with a hatchet - pretty easy.

We generally get foam off (shovel is preferred tool)
Don't worry too much about immersion heaters cylinders are braziery copper so can have up to 5% brass content.

I don't bother taking foam off. My scrap yard knocks a few kilo off for it and it saves the mess doing it.

Ask at the yard what they pay for the cylinders. In the recent past I have removed all braziery and brass and they have given me heavy copper price. Last time they paid as braziery copper. Vary's a bit but might be worth asking a few yards opinions on it.

I was stupid enough not to check the position of the pipes under the tiles when installing a toilet and drilled right through the center of a 16 mm copper water pipe. I exposed the pipe by removing a ~30cm section of the plastic sleeve and a ~10 cm section of the pipe around the hole. Several...

Copper pipes, I think its fair to say, is not what it used to be, the copper is getting thin while the cost is going up. Meanwhile, plastic Pushfit seems to be getting better and better, cost and convenience was always better, but now the quality is to, have we reached a stage where plastic will...

The fittings below are for a mixer bar attached to a self contained shower. i.e not a wall. The attaching screws have snapped. I could get two new brackets, dismantle that existing one and start again or I could try and re attach via those screws, removing the broken ones from the plate and wall...

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...
