Discuss Broken TRV RAD Valves in the Plumbing Jobs | The Job-board area at PlumbersForums.net

Hi, Just after a little advice related to some TRV's.

Basically my partner lives with me and rents her property out, tennents in her house have in the space of about 7 months managed to break 2 TRV's (snap the heads off) and are saying that they should not be paying for them as "They dont last forever" and "The heat makes them brittle"
Every other TRV in the house turns freely and shows no sign of sticking or resistance to turning. I can't see how through normal use they could manage to break 2 of these TRV's.

Does it sound likely that the heat has made them brittle over time? How long should a TRV last realistically? I have a feeling they have just been careless while moving items around and have bashed them.

Any advice?

Thanks.

They don't just break on their own but can get brittle with time, decent quality ones will last a decade before becoming brittle.
I've never known one break through normal use. It's likely they have been heavy handed with them or as you say bashed them with something. You can't be 100% though unless you were there when it broke.

Had Myson TRV 2's through my house since I moved in, the bit at the bottom that touches the metal of the valve gets brittle and does as you say 'disintegrate' eventually but my guess is they were in for a good 15+ years before they did, they were the bonny beige and brown ones.
My first post said 'I have never seen one break through normal use', so that was wrong, I've seen old ones break through normal use :)

Glad to see you are in board;);)
