Bosch Worcester Greenstar i System Boiler Ventillation requirements

Hi all,

Looking for advice on the ventillation of the Bosch Greenstar i System Boilers. I've had one fitted into a new home I've purchased and the developer missed a course of bricks out so the ceiling is too low to install a vent to the outside. The boiler is in a small room (2m x 1x1.8m x 2.2m high). They have fitted a pipe to the outisde that goes via the adjoining garage (at ceiling level) and the pipe is rectangular so it can fit in the small ceiling void (approx 4cm x 20cm cross-section). They have fitted an extractor fan (i.e. meant for bathroom) on the end inside the room where the boiler is installed, which is operated by a switch.

This is a workaround since it cannot be vented externally - is this acceptable? It seems stupid to have to run an electric extractor fan when the boiler is on?

Are you talking about an additional vent or the flue pipe

Hi,

It's an additional vent in the ceiling. They have used the following adaptor to convert the round hole for fan attachment into a rectangular shape where the slimline duct then runs through ceiling void, through wall in to garage, across garage ceiling and eventually through exterior wall.

I thought for a moment a space saving rectangular balanced flue was quite a good idea but no such thing exists to my knowledge.

You really must post pictures so we can accurately assess the installation for ourselves.

I'll try and get pictures this evening but it's unlikely I'll be able to gain access to the property. The boiler is wall mounted with a balanced flu that exits through a side wall. So the basic question is are building regs complied with if a ceiling mounted extraction fan is used for ventilation, rather than a direct vent to the outside (if that explanation helps)?

Sorry wrong end of stick thought it was for flue gases, as Steve says below many boilers don't required a vent. Is it a utility room?

Yes the boiler is in a small utility room (room just contains cupboard with system boiler and a washer/dryer). I'm not clear if Bosch/building regs dictate this boiler needs ventilation.

The boiler doesn't need additional ventilation as it can be fitted in an unventilated cupboard as long as there is enough clearance around it (specified by manufacturer) for servicing.

If it isn't fitted in a cupboard then no problem.

Make sure you get the Benchmark form filled in otherwise boiler won't be covered under WBs warranty. Sounds like the developer hasn't use a GSR installer otherwise he could have answered your question

The OP just assumed (incorrectly) the utility room extractor needs to be on when the boiler is running.

Just seems strange that the OP is even getting involved with ventilation when it's not needed. So I interpreted that as no-one onsite is qualified...

Surely the extractor is for the washing machine and or drier. But I would still want to get my hands on the ticket before I exchanged!
