I think I've overtightened the thread on top of the radiator. It's leaking. How do I replace the rubber seal, without draining the system?

That's when the op finds the trv is letting by and wishes they called a plumber in the first place

Either like Ermi says (use ptfe) or nip down to the plumbing merchants and buy a blister pack that has a vent and a chrome blanking cap, isolate and change.
