I thought I'd share some of my limited install experience with you that I got from the academy I just finished training at.

We got to use quite a variety of material: copper, LCS & plastic and got to install WC's, wash basins, rads, a bath etc and got to bend / solder a lot of pipe.

So I just thought I'd share to see if you think my pipework is any good? *gulp*

Cheers

Good job producing the standard required to pass your course. You will likely never do any plumbing like that again. Your half passovers look a little out but that's being picky and could be the angle the pictures are taken from. I am not great at bending myself. My experience is that in most domestic scenarios you will pull passovers that are closer to the pipe as they are infrequently insulated and space is often at a premium. Be prepared to find installations where none of the rules you have been told to apply have been, even in relatively recently completed new build and especially not in homes that have had the odd bit of DIY bodgery Pokery. Your soldering looks tidy. Keep at it, Dont loose heart with the time it may take to get the experience you need. You are at the starting line of a long journey. This trade can be extremely rewarding but not always financially.

Hi Solutions,

Thanks so much for the comments. Agreed, we were spoiled with the optimum conditions but had to work with precise measurements to pass the C&G practical tasks. Personally I think large passovers look quite ugly but our hands were tied.

I'm excited to start the journey, and a little wide-eyed if I'm honest. But I'm prepared to work hard and stick at it. That in itself will be rewarding for me!

Cheers

Whereabouts is the center in London, Jay??

I hope you didn't put those burn marks on the wall. LOL

Keep up the good work, what was the qualification you were on ?

Hahaha burn marks? Oh you mean the free decorative heat strokes! lol

I trained in Kent. It was the C&G 6035 Level 2 and Level 3 Water Regs and Unvented Hot Water Systems. I'm going to try and get some experience and get my NVQ sorted out.

As said, nice pulled bends and soldering.

My only criticism is you could've used a few more clips to keep your pipes on the vertical, Also mounting the clips on the same line rather than higgledy piggledy looks a sight betterer.

Other than that, nice job.

Haha yes, agreed re: arbitrary clipping! Thanks so much for the feedback, much appreciated :)

I feel your pain, looks great though. I didn't mind LCS so much if I wasn't threading by hand. The machine is a godsend. Manual stock and dies are a nightmare! Thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated ;)

Pffttttt..........

Hand threading. It'll make a man of you and put hairs on your chest.

Job I was on a while ago the machine broke down. I think I hand cut 28 threads of inch and a quarter while my mate frigged about getting the thing going.

Quick cuppa then it was his go.

Mind you it was a new die which probably helped!

The trick is to switch arms haha don't wanna be accused of hairy palm syndrome! ;)

Trick is to use copper and lag it before anyone else goes in plant room...

And be mates with jerk of works

Like the rad in screwed iron

done a fair bit in schools
would never of got away with that pipe leaning back to the lockshield
and the union in the middle in the bottom pipe

but that was back in the day fair play looks good the blokes I was working with we're a nightmare
Got a piece of pipe thrown at me cause I cut it at 13 1/2 end to Center istead of 13 5/8 end to Center

the trick with iron is planing three lenghts ahead

just finnished some 2" pipe in a plant room and it looks nice 2 threads showing
all cleaned up and painted my mountain of a apprentices has a new found respect for
pipe fitters told him it men's work

all the best keep up the good work

Hi all, this is probably a daft question but I need to run my cold feed from one side of my wall mounted boiler to the other. Running it beneath the boiler is difficult with lots of obstacles, is it okay if I run soldered copper over / across the top of the boiler? It'll be about 4" off the top...

I was stupid enough not to check the position of the pipes under the tiles when installing a toilet and drilled right through the center of a 16 mm copper water pipe. I exposed the pipe by removing a ~30cm section of the plastic sleeve and a ~10 cm section of the pipe around the hole. Several...

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...
