Hello Forum,

I've noticed at times that my boiler is heating in a very short cycle.

30 seconds on at full flame, heating to 65c.
30 seconds off, cooling to 37C.
30 seconds on at full flame, heating to 65c.

It cycles like this for 10mins or so, then goes quiet for a period of time, then repeats.
- During this cycling the boiler is whistling a bit when it gets close to 65c and there is a bit of a clunk when the heating stops.

At other times it is heating with less intensity, for longer time periods (3-5 min), with the flame stength going up and down.
- It then stops heating for a long period.

Is this typical boiler behaviour or is something not right?

Doesn't sound normal depending on circumstance

Does it do this when the heatings cold

Hi Shaun,

Unfortunately, due to my health I rarely have the heating off.

In the past when the heating has been cold, I didn’t notice this short cycling.
- is short cycling the right terminology?.

I will try to find out during the week if we get a mild day.

It's expected if it only does it when the heating system is hot because the return temp is coming back warm

Hi Folks, I have a challenge with a Main Eco Elite 30 Combi which is short cycling on the CH. Water works fine. As soon as you have call for heat, the boiler fires up, modulates, but jumps very quickly (about 30 seconds or so from 40'ish all the way to 70, burner disengages putting it the...

Hi I have a Glow-worm back boiler which is giving me grief (I would have upgraded it by now but its a listed building and there's issues with venting through the external wall and I'm reluctant to go with an electric boiler instead (because of the consumption cost)). It's a sealed system. The...

Good morning. We have a 10 year old Ultracom which now very frequently thinks there's a demand for hot water, even though there isn't, so the boiler kicks into that mode, and sits there heating tap water that isn't going anywhere. Sometimes this happens if a cold tap has been used or the loo...
