Where is it a cave ??

old cottage in a town 15 mile from anywhere

and the original hole was just slightly bigger than the stop tap head

What you using to replace the old one. I only ask as I had to do one the other day and do you think for the life of me I can get the lead loc to seal. Been back to it 3 times already and it has the smallest of flipping weeps. It's killing my moral:confused::confused::(

Mine is lead. I have seen the Philmac fittings but they are bulky. Do not think that I will have space for it. But will give it a go.

I recently replaced a leaded mains water pipe and had to dig up quite a long and deep trench, was no fun but had to be done. I also used those Philmarc fittings.
