Questions are: 1) Can I use the hot water input for the...

Cistern needs replacing but on inspection looks like a bigger problem...

The other day I tried flushing one of the toilets in our house, but the handle went straight down and I heard the sound of plastic breaking. Part of the 3 piece cistern had somehow become detached from a groove lock holding it in place. The action of turning the flush handle sharply managed to...

Do all my inserts need replacing?

Hi all The other day a pipe had burst in the bathroom under the floorboards due to one of the caps (not sure of the actual technical name) falling off. This completely flooded our downstairs. The plumber said it was due to cheap inserts being used. So my question is, should we have a plumber...

Hi, I have 15 year old Cannon Caniston gas cooker and when I turn the tap for the biggest burner full on it burns as if it was only half on, this has happened over time. I have checked the flexible hose is not kinked and the gas at the main is fully on, the other burners seem to be ok. I cleaned...

Replacing "short wire" in immersion heater

Hi, This morning, I found that my immersion heater had stopped working. The short wire that runs from the thermostat to the live terminal of the heater had fried (or at least its insulation did) and disconnected from the terminal pin. Although I've scavenged a replacement wire from an old...

Replacing a Rayburn BM30 Oil Valve with a Toby Valve.

I am told that a Toby 4cc-13cc oil control valve can be used to replace my Rayburn’s faulty obsolete BM30 4cc-13cc oil control valve. Will the Toby fit directly in place of the BM30 on the same mounting bracket on the side of the Rayburn, and are the Toby’s inlet and outlet connections in line...

Does my immersion element need replacing?

I'd appreciate some guidance on whether my thinking is right: Direct feed, immersion-only tank, probably about 15 years old. Lower, side-entry element stopped heating the water at night. Testing showed that the timer was no longer switching the relay, so I replaced it. Since then, it has not...

Tub/Shower Faucet Eventually Starts Dripping Again After Replacing Valve Stems

Ah, the joys of older home ownership (1974). We thought our major plumbing issues were dealt with when we got rid of our orangeburg sewer line and our rusted out galvanized supply line to our house. It's still galvanized under the house, but we live in a very dry climate and the pipes/joints...
