Can an anyone advise me on what the thermostat in the middle of the top of this picture is supposed to be set to? What is its purpose?

Hope you can help.

Would it be a frost stat?
Frost stats are simply to protect the boiler and pipes from freezing, especially with outside boilers and will put power through to boiler and pumps.
What was it set at?

It could be, it ranges from -15 to +15

Depends on outside pipes if exposed, etc, but it would need to be set at a temperature that the boiler would only come on if in danger of beginning to freeze. You don't want the boiler coming on and off in fairly mild weather. So normally +5 degrees or less.
Those stats allow live power to boiler and all power needs to be isolated for any engineer to begin working on boiler

Many thanks for the info chaps.

I'll set it to 3°

Thanks again everyone.

Thomo.

Would reccomend it to be incorporated with a pipe thermostat. Otherwise, it will fire up most of the winter nights.

That's true too.
Looks like it's been done for the easiest ( but not best ), or DIY.

Next time you have the boiler serviced ( every 12 month ). Get the Engineer to shift it for you
