O

on31ll

we got a site sponsor that builds websites still or not

need a website deigning

we not got a replacement. want a real flashy show off website hahaha just because

Think it was TWD, he even scrapped the website that his advert linked to.

I don't think they were necessarily poor.
The thing is with sites it is very hard to distinguish one from another and they all format the same to a degree.
So for a cheaper price what this kid was doing - I dont think you can reasonably expect an exclusive groundbreaking, never seen that before, type site. But perhaps he was a bit premature by showcasing what was a work in progress.

Designing and formatting a site is hard. Its hard to realise someones imagination into a visual concept. It takes time and continuous refinement. Getting colours and shapes and a general feel is hard to be harmonious and make things work together..

Most here couldnt design a good business logo let imagine a complex site to convey to a designer. And when a designer is let loose they say "thats not what i had in mind"....

I remember he was getting panned regarding his SEO standpoint and to be fair - i understood where he was coming from.
SEO is a black art and time intensive - google it.
Many site companies only include the basic SEO tricks such as metatags, sitemap and search engine url trawling.

Now google keep moving the goal posts so now more than ever sites get ranked due to black art alogrithms and not word density or H1 H2 H3 tagging. They even take a downer if the colours are wrong. Or too many capital words or bad font size.

They now like linking and pointing and crap loads more especially weighing is towards google adwords for obvious reasons you get more brownie points for that.
Which I have found it to be a complete waste of money.

SEO needs monthly tweaking all the time to make it work.
I made the mistake of contacting a well known place regarding it and they were gonna send a Rep from manchester or liverpool to newcastle.
I think they thought i have blue-chip deep pockets and it was gonna be about ÂŁ80 quid a month. Needless to say i told them not to bother - but it highlights my SEO point that if you buy a site for 300 or 400 - dont expect ongoing black art SEO.

He did however have a wobbler and evaporate which is a shame as he was largely trying to educate the uneducated with regard to how it works.

But Regarding SEO..

If you have a website goto SEOmysite and see how your site fares.

I am going to stick my neck above the parapet and say that for what 99% of us do a decent template site is all we need.

Spend the money on SEO if you can't do it yourself. That will get you many more leads than a flashy site that no one can find.

There is no dark art to SEO: -

Haven't paid anyone a penny to get our site ranked 4th on Google. The ones above us are the big national companies and I'm not going to beat them really.

And that highlights the issue.
Its a very broad search term and you've come out

Now youve just passed your gas.
Now type in i need a combi lincoln or gas repair lincoln or new combi lincoln or gas repair
Or new gas cooker lincoln.

You are nowhere to be seen i know what youll say to that...but anyway..
Not even close to being close with many.
So imagine how much you are missing out on.
Because if someone needs a new bathroom they always type in
"Lincoln plumber"
Or if someone needs a gas service or boiler upgrade...
"Lincoln plumber"

Do they hell.. not by a long chalk so your very generic phrase proves a small point on this thread but doesnt prove much in many ways regarding the scope of work you aim to do.
but in reality type in anything else and your near nowhere. But if your happy then great, but imagine what else it could bring if done right..

To a very limited degree indeed from certain software i can tell what phrases are searched for and what comes near the top. Obviously its a guide as google dont release this. But there are a few limited ways.

As i said earlier its like trying to educate the uneducated lol

I do my own with the tools I have and it works ok. A specialist would undoubtedly make it work better - but for a cost im not prepared to pay..

Serif is good enough.
As croft says - 8 out of 10 times its all you need, as when you get a quote you can just point them toward the site.
But inwas just saying regarding the previous seo bit

I know one really good, professional web designer, more than 15 years of experience in web building, SEO, the lot… As you say – you get what you pay for. After the mentioned dude pulled out, I’ve tried to hook up the designer with our lot but for some reason the gods were a bit slow. I could have another go at it… As long as everyone is up for it.

I have a plumber coming tomorrow to change a cartridge on a badly dripping tap on my bathroom mixer unit. There is no separate isolating valve for this tap so I'll have to close the stopcock. I tried closing it today but it won't go absolutely 100% closed and there is still a very slight flow...
