Hello all
Spot of trouble, help much appreciated.

I'm working in a house with an ancient boiler, a Stelrad Ideal Classic RS40 with a hot water cylinder, apparently without a heating element. Never worked on such a system before.

Since altering the gate vale settings the boiler seems to get excessively hot. I'd just like to check that I've returned the valves to the correct position, ie, both fully open, for normal operation.

Many thanks indeed for any guidance you can offer.

Welcome to the forums.

Old gate valves don`t always play nice once disturbed, spindles can shear for one. Just saying.

Agreed one that you think is open might well be stuck shut

Thank you very much for your replies.

Waiting for Thames water to fix faulty outside mains, all 3 internal stopcocks and 1 gate valve knackered. But at least the heating's on.

If you could help one step further and confirm that both valves should be fully open under normal conditions, that would be great, so I can stop waiting for it to blow up. Thanks again.

Both op[en. If the spindle has snapped the valve head will just keep turning.
That cylinder has a heat exchanger btw. follow the half inch pipe
