Hi folks, hoping someone can offer some advice regarding the above!
just got home from a 2 week holiday last night to discover the toilet isn't flushing anymore.
I did a bit of investigation and think I've found the source of the problem.
Our toilet is a concealed plastic cistern with a blue front access panel on the cistern itself. The flush is a single flush push button.
There's a plastic tube which goes from the back of the flush button to a connection on the front of the access panel and then a separate tube which connects from the back of the access panel to the flush syphon. This tube is the culprit as I discovered it had disconnected from the syphon and was dipped into the tank. When we pushed the flush, it pulled water out of the tank and back towards the button.
i reconnected the tube at the syphon end and that fixed it, but it's coming off every few flushes.
I called a plumber out this morning and explained the problem, he said he'd cut the tubing at either end to make a tighter connection and put some silicon around it to hold it. He proceeded to do this to the tube between the button and the front panel and then went to flush the toilet - which didn't work as the tube on the inside of the tank was still disconnected (he hadn't looked inside the tank at this point). Obviously this drew more water into the tube and subsequently into the flush button.
He decided to remove the front access panel and has connected the tube from the back of the button directly to the syphon as a temporary fix. He didn't try cutting the internal tube to make a better connection or use any silicon on it but I didn't ask why and he didn't say. He went to try again and I said he'd need to wait as the tank hadn't refilled yet - it's really slow to fill, always has been.
He says I need a new flush button as it's been flooded but he'll also quote me for a new cistern too as its slow to fill.
Have to admit, I'm a bit bemused as as far as I can see, a new flush button won't actually fix the problem with the connection inside the tank and now the access panel is off. He's charged me £80 call out and left so I'm not sure what the best solution going forward is.
Should i I get the whole cistern replaced, replace the flush button, or is there another solution I can try as my feeling is the problem is either with the plastic tube being too loose or the connection with the syphon not fitting correct any more.
i'd appreciate any help as I'm rather confused now!
