Good morning all, Anyone dismantled a Rayburn 480kb MX or indeed any 400 series. I have one that has a failed boiler - replacement ordered. I was hoping that there may be some advice out there. Particularly can I access the boiler from the top and front; it is in a fireplace, or does the whole thing need to be lifted out? Cant say I'm looking forward to this. Even an exploded diagram would help. Thanks in advance

If the rayburn is a Mark I or II then a replacement machine is about all you can do. The wall between the boiler and cooker will have a crack in it and heat will leak from the burners to the cooker. If you've not done major work on a rayburn (e.g. built one) then I'd suggest you don't even attempt replacing the jacket (if that's what you're thinking of doing).

Is it the burner that requires replacing? Or is there a major water leak? Or what? And how old is it?

Thanks for the reply. The unit is an MX (MK 3) and the boiler is leaking. I have a replacement boiler on order from Agafix. I understand that the replacement is doable but I was just trying to gather helpful info before starting work, probably Feb time. The boiler is located in a separate box to the cooking part. There will be damage to the insulation but that seems to be available. The total replacement is probably too expensive, and given that the unit is only 10 years old my economic soul has great difficulty in ditching it

You can phone Aga/Rayburn and they will email exploded diagrams. It is a specialised job though, especially with the insulation. I'm not saying "Don't attempt it" but it won't be at all easy.

I'm afraid that the Mark III was the worst and 10 years is their lifespan (the Mark I and Mark II are around 15 years).

Best of luck!!

Thanks, the only help I've had from Aga/Rayburn is an offer to send out an engineer to assess the problem sometime in late Jan! I know what the problem is! Thanks anyway I had better "look forward to the challenge"

Never done one myself but saw the technical bullitin from aga several years ago, if i remember correctly you need to pull the Rayburn out into the room as you need access to the left hand side as well as the top.

Roger, sorry pressed wrong key!! Thanks I was coming around to that thought myself, even if it was only from the viewpoint of ease of work when dealing with corroded bolts etc. Thanks again, Merry Christmas to all.
