I completed my 6129 tech certificate last year by doing a part time evening course at north notts college. I fully intended to complete the NVQ2 when i had enough money and/or if and when an opportunity work in the industry arose.

I am now in the process of taking redundancy from my current job and have been given the opportunity to work with a property development firm to carry out my NVQ2. The firm has been around 10 years and the owner who i would be working with was originally trained in plumbing, without gaining qualifications due to the course folding. The company specialises in bathroom/kithchen re-fits.

I wouldnt be employed by this company as i am only working with them to gain my NVQ.

The college have rejected my application due to the following reasons:

Low success rates by students not employed.
Will required work criteria be carried out.

I am in the process of appealing the decision as i know time is running out. The cost will be my own so i believe i am the one taking all the risk.

Any advice?

Cheers Steve.

its understandable, the likelyhood of passing is less compared with somebody who is employed and the college are judged by success rates right or not. they are told they can only enrol if they feel the candidate has a good chence of succeeding, its called enrolling with integrity, private centres font have the same restrictions

how much are they charging? and how do you know the cost is all your own?

The overall cost is £1370. Unsure if any of the costs are funded through the college/govt or not.

I understand they have targets to hit but I assumed as long as you had a "placement" and you were paying for the course that would be fine. As i am paying for the course surely the risk lies with me. Ive made it clear that gaining this qualification would be my main priority as I will un-employed very soon.

Ive already paid out over £1500 with the college for the 6129, which im worried will become next to useless unless i link it with NVQ2.

I dont really want to start from the beginning and have to pay out all over again.

1370 sounds cheap for full cost, its often about 3k. my suspicion is that is subsidised. Depending on how i is subsidised it may be that you have to be employed. the risk isnt with you as a college is judged on outcomes, if they take on people who do not achieve they have to answer to why, if it happens alot the right to offer the qual can be removed. if the local authority are paying a college to offer a course they want an outcome, if they keep paying and people keep failing they aint gonna fund it for long, if it were your money it would be the same wouldnt it?

if its through t2g you must be employed not placed. what do private centres ask for the nvq?

Right, starting to understand the reasoning behind the decision now. So basically i need to be employed by a company to stand any opportunity of getting on the course. I still feel mis-lead by the college though. Whilst doing the 6129 they made the NVQ2 sound really easy to obtain! Why wouldnt they!

To be honest, i havent looked elsewhere to do the NVQ2. My loss of work and trying to find somebody to do the work with has happened very quickly and as I did all my previous qualifications at NNC I just went straight there. Unfortunately, the deadline is close so I hope I can make them re-think their original decision.

in my experience alot of candidates feel misled about the nvq, but all too often they hear what they want to hear, they want to know that the nvq is easy to obtain and all they need is a few photos, when it dawns on them whats required they get angry or frustrated and thats often aimed at the college. not saying they didnt mislead you, i wasnt there, but i have seen this before

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...

We run a community village hall and have a large kitchen provided for the use of hirers. This includes a Lincat SLR9 gas cooker which I believe is a 23.8Kw appliance with all six burners and oven on max. This was installed some 10 years ago and has passed all subsequent Gas Safety inspections as...
