Before Present (BP) years, or "years before present" is a time scale used mainly in archaeology, geology and other scientific disciplines to specify when events occurred before the origin of practical radiocarbon dating in the 1950s. Because the "present" time changes, standard practice is to use 1 January 1950 as the commencement date (epoch) of the age scale. The abbreviation "BP" has been interpreted retrospectively as "Before Physics", which refers to the time before nuclear weapons testing artificially altered the proportion of the carbon isotopes in the atmosphere, making carbon dating after that time likely to be unreliable. In a convention that is not always observed, many sources restrict the use of BP dates to those produced with radiocarbon dating; the alternative notation RCYBP is explicitly Radio Carbon Years Before Present.

    Appropriate fitting for copper pipes?

Hi, Upstairs flat changed their boiler - some of their old fittings couldn't stand the pressure, big hole in our ceiling. Their plumber put in a temporary fix as they were unable to solder. Any thoughts on whether what they've done is suitable as a long term fix? The ceiling is not yet back...

    Advice on leaking toilet

Hi there, I posted a few weeks ago asking for advice about my ideal standard concealed dual flush plate toilet which was leaking slowly into the toilet pan. The slow leak has speeded up and is now more like a tap being on. The problem is we're due to go away for a few days and I'm wondering if...

Any logic to hosing rads out before a powerflush?!

In passing, it was mentioned that when the system's drained down, it would benefit it if I took the rads off and sort of jiggle them round and run a garden hose to help clear them through before a flush was done but, and unless I'm not understanding how a flush works, shouldn't the chemicals and...

    Strange setup

Since my in-laws boiler was replaced they have been having a number of issues, such as poor radiator temp and rads on with hw, to name a couple. The company has been out multiple 6+ times and tbh sounds like they are clutching at straws, especially as it worked before the replacement and now...

I have a quote from a local plumber who we have used before and no complaints. The quote is for the replacement of our ancient outdoor wall hung boiler.
