Looking at replacing a normal radiator with a modem taller vertical type in my son's bedroom. As top of new radiator will be higher than the system vent and pump, will this cause a problem? Or do I need to extend vent pipe to be highest point?

No as V/radiator will be highest point just fit a rad auto air vent , replaces normal air vent about £5.
