Why do most people advertise as plumbing and heating? Doesn't heating come under plumbing why not just put plumbing? I know you can obviously specialise in one erea but if you have plumbing on the side of the van doesn't that cover it all? Hmm

i have a plain white van to stop me van getting bost into. I advertise as AW Heating and Plumbing because i do both jobs. Most general public see them as two different trades, best to explain what work you cover.

i think they are different, the new plumbing course has changed its title to P&H

people dont understand the difference i find, servicing a boiler the other day was asked if i know any good plumbers(even though my company name has plumbing & gas in it)and last year when doing boiler install was asked if i knew any good plumbers aswell

I still haven't got my van signed yet, so its just white but isnt it the best form of advertising though

best form of advertising you have tools on the back!

i think it depends what you do, i mainly work on sites or contracts so dont really need it. I have worked on sites where a number of vans have been done over at the same time, its normally the vans that are sign written with plumber or sparks on that get done over first because they know that we tend to carry the most expensive kit.

would be interesting to do a survey of what public's preconceptions are because obviously we're biased. if i see a van that says pete's plumbing i presume he doesn't touch gas. but who knows what people not in the trade think overall. since i get asked what i do a lot i suppose it would indicate that people at least recognise that not everyone does everything and therefore imply a distinction is understood to exist.

I've had a number of oil boiler customers who have asked if I know of someone who could look at their bathroom tap or move a radiator. Likewise, when I'm in a house doing a bathroom/tap/radiator and they've an oil boiler I tell them I can service and repair them and they've expressed surprise.

Just one of those things, I assume. I didn't know (until I started plumbing) that electricians are happy to look at heating controls and change immersion heaters.

Ditto

The average punter is to put it mildly, stupid!
Unless you list everything you do they presume you don't or can't hence the vans with plumbing, heating, gas fitting, bathrooms, powerflushing, dog walking etc.

I'll just stick to being the invisible man in my white van.
I don't want or need the numpties.

maybe trying to tell you something?.lol.

I think most people's perception of a plumber is fixing the loo ect. If googled a plumbers roll is to install potable water and disposal of waste.

Agree with AW..think that having the van sign written is an invitation to all scrap hawks & power tool thieves. Haven't ever had a job yet where the custard said 'saw your van the other day'

i have to agree with tams point though that most of the public are daft as a brush, really annoys me how dumb people are and they not make an effort to educate themselves

Mine's sign written and I've had loads of people phone/use me because of it.

Me too. and fingers crossed, never had my van touched yet either.. although having the big dog in the front helps too.

another way of looking at it, what percentage comes from the advertising on you van? as apposed to other forms of advertising?

i know it seems silly but one of the things that would put me off having a sign-written van is i'd feel like a driving billboard. i like a bit of anonymity.

Nothing worse than seeing the plumbers van lying in the pub car park overnight. Not good for the image

Quite agree - much better to tell the truth ...

another awful one from dkia ...

it's good advertising and looks more professional in my opinion. I do get passers by approach me because of my van which have turned out to be good customers so it's worth it to me. Same goes for clothing. Each to their own though.
