gravity

Gravity (from Latin gravitas 'weight'), or gravitation, is a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass or energy—including planets, stars, galaxies, and even light—are attracted to (or gravitate toward) one another. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects, and the Moon's gravity causes the tides of the oceans. The gravitational attraction of the original gaseous matter present in the Universe caused it to begin coalescing and forming stars and caused the stars to group together into galaxies, so gravity is responsible for many of the large-scale structures in the Universe. Gravity has an infinite range, although its effects become weaker as objects get farther away.
Gravity is most accurately described by the general theory of relativity (proposed by Albert Einstein in 1915), which describes gravity not as a force, but as the curvature of spacetime, caused by the uneven distribution of mass, and causing masses to move along geodesic lines. The most extreme example of this curvature of spacetime is a black hole, from which nothing—not even light—can escape once past the black hole's event horizon. However, for most applications, gravity is well approximated by Newton's law of universal gravitation, which describes gravity as a force causing any two bodies to be attracted toward each other, with magnitude proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
Gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental interactions of physics, approximately 1038 times weaker than the strong interaction, 1036 times weaker than the electromagnetic force and 1029 times weaker than the weak interaction. As a consequence, it has no significant influence at the level of subatomic particles. In contrast, it is the dominant interaction at the macroscopic scale, and is the cause of the formation, shape and trajectory (orbit) of astronomical bodies.
Current models of particle physics imply that the earliest instance of gravity in the Universe, possibly in the form of quantum gravity, supergravity or a gravitational singularity, along with ordinary space and time, developed during the Planck epoch (up to 10−43 seconds after the birth of the Universe), possibly from a primeval state, such as a false vacuum, quantum vacuum or virtual particle, in a currently unknown manner. Attempts to develop a theory of gravity consistent with quantum mechanics, a quantum gravity theory, which would allow gravity to be united in a common mathematical framework (a theory of everything) with the other three fundamental interactions of physics, are a current area of research.

Problems with hot water on a gravity fed system.

Asking for a neighbour. He has an old style gravity fed heating system with tank and immersion heater. He has just changed the pump and three way valve actuator. His heating works but if he selects hot water it turns the heating off. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

Advice on replacement Towel Rad on Gravity System heated by Multifuel Stove

Hello, My current installation is an 8Kw Morso Stove, about 20 years old, connected to: An indirect coil in a vented cylinder (on the ground floor where the heater is, but raised by about 80cm), gravity fed with a bathroom towel rail upstairs also gravity fed. Once the gravity circuit is up...

    Gravity hot

Hi, i have a customer who has been having their part2 float valves in the loft changed every two years. I thought this excessive so did some investigating. Have found that the bath shower mixer is on cold main and gravity hot. When customer put this on thw vent pipe let water into the tank. Has...

    gravity flow

Can gravity flow work in a circular motion ? e.g. 28mm flow rising from stove accross ceiling down through cyl coil and return to stove under floor I know that this system has to be vented properly. I could fully pump as an alternative as the cylinder is about 5 m from boiler. I have plumbed...

    Anti gravity loop installation

Hi all. I hope you are all well. I am hopefully doing my last bathroom of the year as I am totally peed off with em. Well, I still have my 2 at home to do but that will hopefully be fun! I am installing a pump above a cylinder from a non stop flange. What's the best way to do the loop coming...

    Woodburner with gravity circuit

I have been contacted by a customer to change their hot water cylinder. The existing setup is - small open vent copper cylinder, 28mm primaries from woodburner to cylinder. 22mm cold feed and vent pipe. Not pumped, gravity circulation. No heating. Can i use a normal (bigger) cylinder and repipe...

Poor flow on gravity feed bath/shower mixer

hi, new member here. I have a question for the forum. I have a shower/ mixer in the second bathroom which has always had poor flow. The mixer has a spring loaded mixer and a 40 year old Triton booster pump between the mixer and the shower head. It has become more of a priority as it is for now...

    Gravity Cold Water issue

Went to a house today with no cold water coming out of the upstairs taps, 3 taps in all. Hot water okay but poor pressure. In addition no cold water is coming out of the shower which is fed by a negative head pump with it's own seperate cold feed. The pump does not kick in even when selected to...

    Gravity and vented thermal store.

Apologies for the unusual question, as I am an interested DIYer. The question is, why do you need a gravity coil, on a thermal store? Surely, you'd get better flow rate from direct connections to the side, as there would be no friction and you could use 35mm or 42mm copper pipe, to a 2 inch...

Why are Cylinders rarely in the loft for Trad. Gravity Vented Systems?

Sorry if I come at this form the wrong direction. I'd like to move my vented-cylinder into the loft. I run two shower-pumps too. I realise a sealed-cylinder is the easy route. Sadly I've not got much mains pressure. Combination boilers don't really have the grunt for fire-hose showers. I'm...
