pumps

A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical action, typically converted from electrical energy into hydraulic energy. Pumps can be classified into three major groups according to the method they use to move the fluid: direct lift, displacement, and gravity pumps.Pumps operate by some mechanism (typically reciprocating or rotary), and consume energy to perform mechanical work moving the fluid. Pumps operate via many energy sources, including manual operation, electricity, engines, or wind power, and come in many sizes, from microscopic for use in medical applications, to large industrial pumps.
Mechanical pumps serve in a wide range of applications such as pumping water from wells, aquarium filtering, pond filtering and aeration, in the car industry for water-cooling and fuel injection, in the energy industry for pumping oil and natural gas or for operating cooling towers and other components of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In the medical industry, pumps are used for biochemical processes in developing and manufacturing medicine, and as artificial replacements for body parts, in particular the artificial heart and penile prosthesis.
When a casing contains only one revolving impeller, it is called a single-stage pump. When a casing contains two or more revolving impellers, it is called a double- or multi-stage pump.
In biology, many different types of chemical and biomechanical pumps have evolved; biomimicry is sometimes used in developing new types of mechanical pumps.

    Heat only or system boiler?

    Custard nearly had me there!

Thought I'd share this. My usual practice is to always fire a boiler up before servicing it, sometimes I forget, sometimes it's chugging away merrily when I turn up. Today I forgot, and after asking if the boiler is working fine to which the reply was "yes", I found an extremely noisy fuel pump...

CH Pumps - stupid questions (?)

Possible stupid newbie question coming up! Q1. I've always wondered... WHY do Central Heating Pumps have such huge couplings on them? I doubt many homes use pipes bigger than 22mm - but the couplings on all the pumps I've ever seen have about 40mm threads. My guess is so you can change the...

Stuart Turner Pumps - Any Good?

Only ever fitted Salamander pumps before. About to do a large project including a new bathroom with shower room. I figure it will be easier to fit a 3 bar single whole house pump to pump the hot water than it will be to fit and plumb a separate shower pump. I was thinking of using a Stuart...

    Wilo or Grundfoss..

I've had 3 hot water pumps blow this week. 2 Grundfoss and 1 Wilo sb30 on secondary return pipes. Not much difference in price. But most of the common plumbing branches only seem to stock Grundfoss. Are they generally a better brand of pump?
