loft
A loft is a building's upper storey or elevated area in a room directly under the roof (American usage), or just an attic: a storage space under the roof usually accessed by a ladder (primarily British usage). A loft apartment refers to large adaptable open space, often converted for residential use (a converted loft) from some other use, often light industrial. Adding to the confusion, some converted lofts include upper open loft areas.
Evening All
Have had some very useful help so far in reading this site so now time to ask my first question.
Please be gentle
We are in the process of a loft conversion that has an en-suite incorporated we had some basic plans done by an architect to inculude this but as we come to plumbing...
Hi everyone,
Been asked to look at a job, the customer and his dad have already ripped out the cylinder and 90% of the old pipework and rads. They will be doing everything minus the gas pipework and fitting the boiler.
They have asked me to do it, they are decent guys to work for. They are not...
Not sure if this is right section of forum to post this, but I was up in customer's loft today and there was what looked like vermiculite (like sutff I use for gardening) up there as insulation. Was this a commonly done thing? Have never come across before now.
Sorry if I come at this form the wrong direction. I'd like to move my vented-cylinder into the loft. I run two shower-pumps too. I realise a sealed-cylinder is the easy route. Sadly I've not got much mains pressure. Combination boilers don't really have the grunt for fire-hose showers.
I'm...
Evening all, just after a bit of advice. I'm due to carry out an install in a couple of weeks. Part of this is putting a 210ltr unvented cylinder in the loft. I've advised we need some some extra support. Beams are 600mm apart and the customer has asked if 18mm board is good enough. First...
Heya
I'm a total novice at diy, having just bought my first house. Sorry for the dumb question that follows.
I've drained and removed a couple of large rads for decorating, but now they're back on, I'm unsure if I need to refill the loft tank somehow to make up for the water lost?
It's a...
Any help here would be appreciated. My overflow pipe from the CWSC in the loft is dripping. It is not a constant drip. I have regualry been checking the level in the loft but is never at the level of the overflow pipe. I am confused as to how this is happening.
Is there any other reasons...
disclaimer - just a homeowner looking for advice
Hi
Was looking through old threads and found one that dealt with the pros and cons of horizontal un-vented cylinders - but the last post on it was a while back and I was wondering if people's views (& the the appliances) had changed much...
hi this has us a bit baffled our heating systems is cold water tank and little f e tank in the loft immersion cylinder in airing cubard and boiler in kitchen
The problem was the overflow to the cold tank keep dripping so I replaced the ballcock turned mains on watched it fill up and cut off...
I've seen brown scum in Fe tanks but not this white scum. I would replace tank after PF but what would you guys do? I've had so much trouble with old systems.... Air , noise, pumps failing, scuz playing havoc after drain down...
What's the protocol for whipping Fe out and converting to sealed...
Hi all,
I've not long moved into our current house and I have had the condensate pipe freeze during this recent weather so I am trying to help prevent it for next time. (It didn't freeze in the last sub zero spell of weather so I can only assume the wind didn't help)
Currently it is draining...
We’re having a loft conversion done in a few weeks. We’re concerned about the pressure that we will have in the loft bathroom when other showers in the house are in use (we will have 3 showers and would like them to be able to be used simultaneously).
We have been looking into unvented...
Hi All - recently moved into a 3br 2storey mid terrace from the early 80s and looking in the loft the plastic "coffin" tank for the gravity flow has obviously been left with its lid off for some time and looks pretty ugly inside.
Would you advise replacement ? Or do folks clean them? It's...
Hi,
I've got a small (30 litre I think) plastic header tank in the loft, and its full of brown sludge. It just has a cold water feed into it, an overflow pipe, and one pipe at the bottom, which joins onto the main central heating pipe. There is a heat only boiler, and a megaflo hot water tank...
Hi all,
Hoping someone can help. I've not yet had a plumber out to check, thought I would get some opinions first if possible. What I perceive to be a problem may not be in reality. I have an unvented mains pressure cylinder in the basement set to 2 bar on the PRV from the mains which is...
We have just installed a bathroom in our loft conversion (2nd floor) and since then the bathroom on the first floor started smelling unbelievably bad. All I know is that they didn't put a soil pipe on the outside on the house but rather on the inside. The smell in the bathroom is coming from the...
Hi, I am new to this forum and hopefully somebody can tell me if I can or can't do this. Here it is.
I want to fit a radiator in the loft and thinking to fit new pipes to the existing pipes which goes to my bathroom radiator. Just want to know is this ok or a bad idea. See photos Any advice...
Hi, bit of a strange one but my overflow pipe drips now and then which goes to my f and e (small) tank in the loft but when I go up there and look at the tank the water level is no where near the overflow, any ideas.?? Thanks.
I've had the installer back for this one already so want to try to get as many facts from the experts as to what might be going on.
New loft conversion, Vaillant EcoTec 37KW boiler on ground floor with UFH in kitchen and 13 rads + the 3 in the loft.
Rad feeds for loft have been taken off the...
We're hoping to have a loft conversion done soon, in what is currently a three bed mid-terraced house - we are adding a new bedroom in the loft with en-suite shower and toilet.
Currently we have a traditional heating system with boiler in the kitchen, fed by gas pipes under the house, hot water...
