Discuss Snapped screws on heat exchanger require a whole replacement? in the Central Heating Forum area at PlumbersForums.net

We just had a service done on our Ideal ICOS boiler and were told that the 2 screws on the back of the heat exchanger have snapped off. It was marked as dangerous and has quoted a whole new heat exchanger as there are still bits of screws stuck inside that cannot be removed.
For 2 broken screws, we have been quoted £1,400 to repair it. So I am wondering if replacing this or the whole boiler itself is our only option for this sort of issue?

He also said that if they replace the heat exchanger and find that there is deterioration in another section, they wont even be able to replace it because that part is discontinued.

Thank you

Without seeing it, hard to comment. Obviously things can be repaired by a competent engineer but he/she does have to weigh up the cost effectiveness of what they are about to take on and what the likely outcome might be, based on experience.
Quite often these attempts are in vain and still cost money.
Corroded aluminium is not the easiest thing to work with. Studs or machine screws corroded into it almost become like a weld.

Youve done well to keep this boiler for so long. Search Youtube for "Do Not Repair Ideal ISAR and ICOS Boilers"
