Removing a gas meter.

One of my customers (a social club) has two U6 meters.
One is no longer required.

BG have quoted just shy of £200 to remove it.

I don't have MET1 but my wonder is that can i get someone with MET1 to remove it or can only the meter provider do it?

I am surprised at this charge. It is a normal sized meter and doesnt require specialist purging. Surely all he has to do is terminate the account and request they remove the meter so as to ensure no standing charge is continuously levied. Simply removing and capping it without authority will not terminate the account.

It's because they are on a commercial account.
I would have no problem with removing the meter and blanking the ECV, but I can't afford the grief I might get if I needed MET1.

Once the meter is out all the club has to do is call to get the meter collected and the account closed.

Point taken mate but this job needs to be done right with no corner cutting.

There isn't any standing charge for gas these days! I'd just turn the mother off! That way no gas is passing through it so no charge!!! Tell the supplier that should they want to remove it they're welcome to do so :lol:

I'll have to check my own to be honest mate ... My understanding was that we all were now just charged for what we used, no more no less?

A good idea AW but seeing as the room in which the offending meter is fitted stores a few grands worth of booze and ****, I doubt that Mr Plod nor BG would believe the 'metal thieves' scenario.

Surely you don't need MET1 to remove a meter, otherwise how can you solder pipework? I think there is a TB on this. I would cap the ECV, then get the customer to phone it through as obsolete, i'd be very surprised if they can blackmail into paying £200 in order to save paying a standing charge on a supply you don't require?
